> I have a quick question for all the UC folk out there. I am in the midst of a

flare, going

on a month now, and suddenly I am getting swollen ankles, and a swollen knee

joint. In all

my previous flares, and I have had UC for over 20 years, I did get arthritis in

my hands

when in the midst of a flare. Has anyone with UC ever had this, and how long did

it last,

what did you do?

Hi Cathleen,

The first few flares I had with UC (20 years ago) were preceded with swollen

joints in my

hands and fingers, but ever since then I have mostly gotten swollen ankles with

the flares.

I also get sore red splotches on my shins at the same time. The swollen ankles

usually go

away in 3 or so days and the splotches fade in about a week. I just do my best

to stay off

my feet and keep them raised. Prednisone used to help, but so did time and

elevating

them.

When I was diagnosed with UC I was in art school and my hands were very

important to

me and that is where the swelling occurred. Later on, I had work where I was on

my feet

all day. I always thought the disease attacked the part of my body I needed to

use, so that

I had to stop what I was doing and take it easy for a awhile.

I haven't had any issues with swollen joints/ankles since starting SCD a year

ago and I'm

sorry to hear that it can still be a problem when on the diet.

Wish I better advice, I hope you feel well again soon,

Hannah
