Hi Marilyn. I live in Toronto, so I would like to know more about where you

stayed and what you ate while you were here. I haven't been able to go to a

restaurant since March. Not that I went to restaurants much before starting

on SCD, since most restaurants were not chemically safe for me, with their

perfumed staff and customers. Many restaurants were already impossible

because of my varied food allergies. For example, Mexican and similar

restaurants were out because I'm allergic to tomatoes, corn, and other

popular ingredients in that cuisine. Most pizza restaurants were out because

of my yeast allergy. But Il Fornello made excellent yeast-free spelt pizzas,

which were my treat pre-SCD. Now I make my own yeast-free, grain-free pizza

crust. But it would be nice to know of places that I might be able to eat

at.

The current contact for the Upper Canada Lower Bowel Society (UCLBS),

Lass, recommended the plain rotisserie roasted chicken at Whole Foods as

being SCD-legal, so I keep some of that chicken in my freezer to indulge in

when I am not up to cooking. Apparently UCLBS is not currently holding

pot-luck meals or other gatherings.

Being in Toronto has some advantages, particularly the ready availability of

Jodi Bager's baking (JK gourmet). Her cinnamon muffin loaves and bags of

fruit granola, while relatively expensive, are delicious and fill the void

when I can't bake. I have been able to find several stores within easy

driving distance that sell Western Creamery pressed dry cottage cheese,

including Daiter's, Sobey's, and Vince in Downsview, so I rarely run out

of cheesecake.

One more thing: when are you coming back to Toronto?

Yes! I'm so glad things went so well. I was so scared....I had all these

horrible images of them confiscating his food, him having to eat out every

meal for a week and coming home in a flare, etc, etc..... I'm a worrier by

nature...can't help it.

Kim,

Same thing when we went to Toronto in 2007 -- I was worried about brining

Shadow and Sunny into and out of Canada. I had every documentation known to

humankind from their AKC certificates to a letter from their vet certifying

that they had been vaccinated for rabies and were healthy. They accepted our

word.

Ellen,

I'd have to go get my trip book to answer some of this. (We make a

notebook for every trip we take and record routes and mileages and other

notes.)

Ah, wait... nothing like having a semi-organized email system.

Best Western Roehampton

808 Mount Pleasant Road CA Toronto, Ontario, M4P 2L2, Canada

Phone:

was where we stayed. Very nice rooms, they got us a refrigerator and all.

I was mostly doing things with our friends, and the household has been

SCD (daughter is now fully recovered from Crohn's, so has been able to

add non-SCD foods back into her diet) so I didn't have to worry about

hidden illegals -- they were super careful with us.

We ate out twice at a small restaurant which served Argentinian beef, and

I was able to get a good meal there -- I took my own salad dressing and

bread. I don't remember the name or the location, only that it was a

small neighborhood restaurant. I can find out if you wish. But the rest

of the time, I was eating Sue's really excellent cooking. I did try some

sausages she found, and was OK with them. (I occasionally get

adventuresome, but then, I've been SCD for seven years, and so can be a

little less strict from time to time.)

Yes, I, too, have tried the " naked chicken " from Whole Foods

and have been OK with it, although I think I would not recommend any

prepared food for the first few months. (When I make these trials, I make

it a point to be extra stricts for some days after to be sure of what

might be the cause if I do react.)

I envy you having access to JGourmet! And easy access to DCCC! I have

begun my bimonthly DCCC chase. (Whole Foods doesn't carry it on a regular

basis and we jump through cartwheels trying to order it. Freshmarket,

which seems to have no problem ordering it, is 50 miles away, and with

the price of gas what it is, that adds considerably to the

expense.)

As to when I'm coming back to Toronto, that depends on Harry's vacation

time! We only had five days the last time, and there's so much I want to

see and do!

My next trip to Canada is likely to be in the West -- Harry and I want to

take the course on rammed earth building that's held on Salt Spring

Island. But I enjoy traveling in Canada. I already told Harry that for my

five year anniversary, ie, when I'm declared cancer free, I want to do a

tour on the Rocky Mountaineer!)

We've unfortunately had to cancel our trip this week -- we've received

word that Annie isn't going to be at the conference, and she was our

primary reason for going.
