Guest guest
I have had UC for 12 years. I have been having flare ups more and more often. I am so sick of taking prednisone and getting all puffed up. I am looking for an alternative. I currently take 2400 mg of asacol a day and have since i was diagnosed. I am going to buy Breaking the Vicious Cycle today. My question is, is it necessary to make your own yogurt? I don't have alot of money and really don't want to buy a yogurt maker. Good for you! >> My question is, is it necessary to make your own yogurt? Yes, you must make your own yogurt. No commercial yogurt is SCD legal, except for use as a starter. If you have an oven that you don't use a great deal, you can (temporarily) replace the oven light with a larger bulb and leave the light on in the oven to create the necessary warmth to ferment the yogurt. Or you can create a " poor man's yogurt maker " with an inexpensive styrofoam chill box and a light socket with a bulb. It is also possible to make yogurt on a heating pad. I admit, I've always used either a yogurt maker or my Excalibur dehydrator, both of which may be too expensive for your budget -- at least until you are sure the diet is going to work for you. I can tell you that SCD does work for the majority of people. It isn't an easy diet to follow, but it's doable. <g> I even managed to stay on it in Hurricane Katrina-shattered New Orleans. An experience I assure you I have no desire to repeat. Most SCDers don't have things quite so traumatic, though there were a batch of Ohio SCDers (my sister among them) who thought they were safe from hurricanes until this year's Hurricane Ike came stomping through their neighborhood. (Sorry, off topic, there!) Welcome to the list -- we're glad you found us, though sorry you needed to. This is a warm, friendly, and above all, helpful group of people who will do their best to assist you in making SCD a natural part of your lifestyle. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Thank you for responding so quickly. I am feeling desperate right now. A few days ago, i spent 97.00 at GNC buying herbal supplements that are supposed to help UC. I don't know if they are doing anything yet. My husband has a dehydrator, I can use that to make the yogurt? Some herbal supplements can be an assist. Some, however, despite being recommended by naturopaths, can be part of the problem. It all depends on the supplement. Desperate is generally how most of us feel when we first get here. In my own case, my IBS and associated disorders took the form of malabsorption which led to my being over 400 pounds in weight... and nothing I did would take it off. SCD has taken time, but I am still loosing weight -- I've dropped 180 pounds (and more... but I'm not saying how much until I reach my next milestone! <grin>). I have regular bowel movements, no gut pain, no urgency and I eat top mark, delicious food. What kind of dehydrator is the one you have? The only one I'm sure of making yogurt in is the Excalibur. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
