According to a spokesperson from Welch's, their 100% Welch's Grape Juice, which lists as ingredients: Grape Juice from concentrate (Filtered Water, grape Juice concentrate), Grape Juice, Ascorbic Acid, (Vitamin c): " Ascorbic acid (Vit c) is added in the form of dry crystals manufactured by a biological fermentation process using corn sugars as raw materials. " The rep to whom I spoke said they no longer made a product that doesn't have anything added. Does this mean Welch's Grape Juice is out also? Not necessarily. Keep in mind that Vitamin C, aka ascorbic acid, is legal. So is citric acid. Remember that milk is just as much of an illegal as corn is -- but the biological fermentation we use when making our SCD yogurt turns the illegal milk into legal yogurt. As a consequence, the biological fermentation used to make the ascorbic acid should break down all products which might be an issue. I grant you that there may be some hyper-sensitive individuals who cannot tolerate this, just as there are some individuals who cannot tolerate SCD dairy products. (I know one person who could never take a Vitamin C supplement until she hunted up some which was not made from corn, so it can happen.) So Welch's is not something I can declare legal or not-legal. It is something to be taken note of, and if someone has difficulty with it, they may want to make their own juice so they can be certain nothing has been added to it. Please recall that the Knudsen Just Juice line, although from concentrate, was approved by Elaine, and does offer some alternatives. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
I agree with Marilyn when she says, if you want to make sure a commercial product is not going to bother you, make it yourself - so you have control over the ingredients. You've priobably discovered even "legals" can cause problems - since we're all so different. In 1991 Elaine (according to her book), received a letter from Welch's about their ingredients and based on that, declared their Purple and White Grape juices legal for us. In 1994 Elaine copyrighted "Breaking the Vicious Cycle".  In that 1st edition she deemed Welch's purple and white juices legal. In 1996-1997, Welch's changed (according to a rep' who has been with the company 30 years) their recipe to make their juices from concentrate. From 1994 - 2004, there have been 11 printings of Elaine's book and with each new printing, Elaine would tweak the info' based on new research or findings.  In the 11th printing edition (2004), Welch's is still deemed legal. In 2005, unfortunately for us all, Elaine died. What can we conclude from these facts? 1.  Elaine did do additional research and found Welch's "made from concentrate" remains legal?  OR 2.  Elaine did not have time to do additional research when Welch's in 1996-1997 changed to concentrates? The answer is unknown.  However, I would think if Elaine found out lots of people were having difficulty with Welch's AFTER they began making it from concentrates, she would have changed her stance on it's legality (Welch's with concentrate has been on the market now for 7-8 years). Again, I go back to my first sentence . . . if Welch's gives you problems, stay away from it. Well wishes to all.  ferna, UC/CD, SCD 97 and 05, No Meds McCain or Obama? Guest guest
I've been using Tropicana OJ and Welch's Grape Juice to make SCD jello. At this point, I think those are the only pre-made products I'm using. I had thought about getting a juicer and making my own grape juice, but the juicers seem to just smush up (scientificaly speaking) the entire grape, peel and all. I'm not really up to peeling every grape before putting it in the juicer. There are limits to what I can do. I thought Welch's mostly removes the peel from their drink. Does anyone have a juicer or know a way of making grape juice where the peel is removed? The peel is more difficult to digest, right? My son is tapering off prednisone, so he is being super super careful with his choice of foods right now while trying to maintain the weight he has gained in the last few months. Down to 5 mgs this week. The Omega 8002 juicer which I have does a pretty good job of removing peels and spitting the de-juiced pulp out. It's not quite as good as I would like when making tomato juice, but it's still pretty good. I made some really spectacular gazpacho with it. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Group, The Knudsen Juices are great. My family uses the Just Black Cherry for Gout. It has great noninflammatory properties for arthritis.I also flood the Grand Kids with this and yogurt anytime they are ill. It is great for the body aches, and tends to keep things going for them, and with the yogurt helps with tummy things too. Some seasons, it seems like they get better at Gammy's, just to go back to the parents in time to get sick again. They stay healthy for the most part, especially for children who shuffle between households. I will fill them with yogurt and Cherry juice on Monday, after Halloween.
