Guest guest
I second that motion- have they checked the -ENTIRE- thyroid panel out?? Jodi SCD 12 months Crohn's/Colitis > > have they checked your thyroid out?
Guest guest
I'm so glad you both mentioned the thyroid test because I have the same problem with my hair, not falling out but very, very dry. I wondered if it was just age or the diet. I take thyroid hormones for Hashimoto's and I read that Elaine said to check your thyroid because the diet also heals that and we may need a lower dose, thanks guys!! Guest guest
Ann, My hair is a disaster. It's gotten a lot better since addressing my Thyroid issues with Armour Thyroid but it's still not great although NOTHING falls out anymore which is awesome!! I hope as I get healthier on the SCD my hair will come around. I must say all of these years with health issues the hair thing is what really depressed me and kind of made me go over the edge at times with sadness.. I used to have such a luscious healthy head of hair. One thing that I learned that is important is to not use harsh shampoos/conditioners and to also brush with a natural preferably boars bristle at least 2-3 a day to redistribute the natural sebum production all over the hair when brushing- plastic will not give you that benefit. I have been reading about natural supplementation of different Thyroid glands to help with Thyroid issues etc- still looking into it. Guest guest
Have you noticed losing hair recently during your flare? I had a period about a year ago, and when I seemed to be shedding hair at a much faster rate than usual - during a flare. Just a point to consider. Guest guest
washing one's hair too often can contribute to deterioration as well. unless you really need to, twice a week is enough washing of the hair. adam jodah235 wrote: > Ann, > > > One thing that I learned that is important is to not use harsh > shampoos/conditioners and to also brush with a natural preferably > boars bristle at least 2-3 a day to redistribute the natural sebum > production all over the hair when brushing- plastic will not give you > that benefit. > > > > -- Adam ow Cowell ('97) UR-Delaware 1156 High Street Santa Cruz, CA 95064 (fax) davidow@... Guest guest
Hi Jodi, Thanks for that. I understand how you feel, I too always had thick luscious hair, it's only these last two months it's changed. I use Frizz Ease products exclusively and even they don't tame it down anymore. The other thing I notice is my finger nails are very hard and long for the first time in my life. I'm enjoying that part though. These changes both began a month into the diet. Thanks for the tips. Guest guest
Yep. Is anything on the low side but with-in normal range? Subclinical is more and more talked about today and the role of thyroid in chronic illness and health. Guest guest
LOL!!! I'm not a druggie :-) - no actually I am not on anything but my acidophilus and vitamins - but thanks for the heads up (oh I take compounded claritin daily - can't imagine that's it ) but will swing it by pharmacist thanks eileen > > Hi Eileen, I keep reading responses to you with all these things about shampoo and brushes and vitamins. How about DRUGS. Do you take drugs? Are any of the side effects about hair loss etc? I took Azathioprine and stopped 6 months later and my hairdresser said I lost over 1/3 of my hair. I now have 2-3 inch spikes everywhere and just restarted the drug. I need to wear a sign on my back saying " It's the drugs! " > Bottom line of my input, check the side effects. Guest guest
thanks I will read up before my tests -I was told they couldn't test me while I'm sick -Have fluid in my ears and a cold starting but after that will test and see thanks again eileen > " Check that it isn't only " TSH " but also things like T3, T4, etc... > > ------------------------ > I second Jodi's statement and want to mention that I always came up as " low normal " on standard Thyroid blood tests so never qualified for consideration of a thyroid issue until I visited a rather unusual endocrinologist. He listened to my story and symptoms (as opposed to only looking at the bloodwork) and on that basis gave me a trial run of thyroid meds to see if they would help. My low normal results are now in the normal range and my hair loss has stopped. I get some shedding during times of serious illness and high physiological stress (like rapid weight loss.) Based on my experience, I recommend reading up on Thyroid imbalance and getting more familiar with the common symptoms for hypo- or hyper-thyroid conditions. Then you can decide for yourself if you want to pursue a diagnosis with a doctor who can treat you. > > Best, Nina in MA >
