Guest guest
AU Legal Department Americans United Is Investigating Whether Existing " Faith-Based " / " Charitable Choice " Government Programs Are Being Implemented In Compliance With The Constitution President Bush's " faith-based initiative " would drastically expand existing government programs that allow government funds to be provided to religious organizations for the delivery of government benefits or services. These government programs are commonly referred to as " charitable choice " or " faith-based " programs. Americans United is investigating existing " charitable choice " / " faith-based " government programs to determine whether they are being implemented in a manner that complies with the Constitution. Such programs can violate the Constitution in many ways, including when they involve any of the following things: • Religious discrimination – a religious organization that gets government money discriminates in hiring, promoting, or firing its employees based on religion or religion-related beliefs or practices. • Religious indoctrination – a religious organization that gets government money to provide government benefits or services subjects the persons who receive the benefits or services to religious indoctrination, religious proselytization, religious worship, or other religious activities. • Lack of non-religious options – a person who prefers to receive their government benefits or services through a non-religious organization must obtain the benefits or services from a religious organization because no non-religious provider of the benefits or services is easily accessible or available to the person. • Religious preferences – a government body awards government funds to a mainstream religious organization instead of a non-mainstream religious organization because of the non-mainstream organization's religious views. If you have experienced any of these violations of the Constitution, or if you know anyone who has, please e-mail us at ccinv@... and tell us what happened. Or, if you prefer, please contact us by mail, telephone, or fax as follows: Attention: Luchenitser / Margaret Garrett Americans United for Separation of Church & State 518 C Street NE Washington, DC 20002 Phone: Fax: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
