Questions about D-Ribose

One of my doctors has recommended that I take d-ribose as a treatment for

ME/CFIDS, a chronic illness I have had for many years. D-ribose is a

monosaccharide, a 5-carbon sugar, that is critical in metabolism in cells.

A deficiency is thought to be one of the sources of fatigue in ME/CFIDS

(chronic fatigue syndrome).

The doctor suggested this to me several months ago, but I had turned it down

on the basis that the only sugars allowed on SCD were honey and fruits.

Since it is a monosaccharide, though, which I finally learned today, it

seems to me that it should be legal.

Does anybody else on SCD take this sugar? I found some articles about

D-Ribose use in fibromyalgia and ME/CFIDS that sounded very promising.

I hadn't come across d-ribose in my recent research on energy and

cellular/muscular metabolism. Intriguing. I'll have to do some more

reading. I'm trying to manage a deteriorating nervous system that

causes issues with cellular metabolism and neuromuscular

communication.

Since d-ribose is a monosaccharide that should make it OK on SCD.

However I would suggest contacting Corvalen, the manufacturer of d-

ribose that the article recommended. The ingredient list for

Corvalen d-ribose indicated 5 g of carbohydrate and sugar along with

d-ribose, which made me wonder what the sources are. In other words,

the ingredients along with the d-ribose might be polysaccharide even

if the d-ribose is monosaccharide. Perhaps there are other sources

of d-ribose that might be less troubling in terms of staying SCD-

legal.

And of course there's no guarantee that your body will tolerate it.

So if you decide to give it a try, start slowly and cautiously.
