Buglewort is a weed with bugle shaped flowers (Lycopus

Virginicus) that is used to treat hyperthyroidism.

It is taken as either tea or tincture, but that is about where

my knowledge runs out. Herbal remedies for Graves are thin on

the ground so any herbalist who is treating Graves should know

about it. Lemon Balm is often used with it.

There is a European Buglewort which is also used in the same

manner although it is a different variety, and probably half a

dozen other weeds with bugle shaped flowers called buglewort

that are probably best avoided.

Some of the sites suggest herbal treatments are only for mild

Graves, I'd have to be feeling very brave, or hypo through using

both herbs and ATD to consider dropping my dose of ATDs.

Oolong tea is based on normal tea, so presumably usually has

caffeine, I think they just prepare the leaves differently

before stewing.

Hi Sue,

Glad to hear from you again and thanks for the update. Will you get to meet

Dawn Rose also? Lucky you!!!

Bugleweed is for hyper, and Dawn Rose can really help you with that and

lemon balm. As for the goiter, things take time, it didn't get big

overnight and it won't shrink over night either. Once you are euthyroid and

stable it should begin to come down.

Take care, REST! and don't be such a stranger!

Jody

Hi Sue

Good to hear from you. Hope all goes well with the endo. I'm sure that no matter

what at least you armed with

information and wouldn't let anyone talk 'guff' to you. Anyway if Dawn Rose sees

this endo I'm sure he/she is great.

Sorry to hear you've been so busy and your levels are a bit erratic. Try to look

after yourself. I'm sure I got this

GD due to a hectic lifestyle in the first place - so number one priority - take

care of yourself.

The change in diet and herbals may be a good option for you. I know from this

group many have had good results from

them.

All the best

Caroline

Hi Sue,

I have written quite a bit to this list about bugleweed, so if you have time

to look in the archives, it will help.

If the search is working, try bugleweed first. Or my name or Dawn Rose,

would be another way to go.

I remember Dawn Rose's whole story meeting this doctor, and how happy it all

turned out. How great for you to get this all set up and be able to see him

also.

The 'short' story on bugleweed... it lowers T4 and I assume also would then

affect TSH. It also works on the antibodies that cause Graves'.

Lemon balm is much weaker, but it does also lower T4.

So these need to be viewed as anti thyroid herbs. Too much will cause hypo.

Different tinctures are different strengths, and we all have different

needs. So a dose recommendation is impossible.

The best thing will be a doctor familiar with these herbs.

IF you try some of the over the counter tinctures, they are not near as

strong as the prescription type, from Naturopathic doctors, but it would be

best to start small and work up.

I took too much one night and knew immediately, it was too much. Slept like

the dead and was very hypo the whole next day. Was pretty easy to figure out

how much I needed after that. LOL

Lemon balm can also be made into a tea, and might be a good first step into

herbs, as the tea will not be very strong. Just don't have any if you think

you are going hypo.

AND... what ever you do with herbs, MUST be consistent, the same as ATDs and

monitored with regular labs.

Hope this does not sound like I am discouraging you. The herbs were the best

thing I did to this dang Graves'.

Hi Jody

I do hope so (meet Dawn Rose that is). We have exchanged privately about

Endo details and have said that we should meet for lunch or coffee or both.

(Caffeine free of course!)

I will talk to Dawn Rose about Bugleweed. You mentioned Euthyroid. Does

everyone get there? It seems so far away.

Hi Caroline

Thank you for the advice of looking after myself. I do take time out,

however when you have a busy lifestyle plus a family to take care of it all

seems to catch up with you. But I do take the time when possible.

Hi Pam

I love the line 'this dang Graves'. I so wish I didn't have it. But at

first I think I had convinced myself that it was some small thing and that

I would be over it in no time.........well you know when we are first told

we all think like this! <grin>

When I was on a high dose of ATD's getting my levels back down, I felt

great. But now I'm trying to get myself so called 'normal' its tough. I

have always been very concerned with my diet, always being careful of what

I ate and in tune with my body. So it has all been a shock to me to end up

with this.

I will be very careful and I'm not 'rushing' into it all. I won't beat

myself up if I go off the rails so to speak every now and then. <grin> As

we do.

I will find out from Dawn Rose where and how to have the bugleweed and

lemon balm.

Thanks so much

Sue

Hi Sue,

>>>You mentioned Euthyroid. Does everyone get there? It seems so far

>>>away.<<<

You will get there eventually...it may take you a bit more time with your

current schedule <from an earlier e-mail>. Sometimes, even if we don't want

to, we do need to make lifestyle changes and slow things down to get our

health back to where we want it. The changes are scary, the 'what do I do,

or what do I give up' questions are right there and there is nothing we

*want* to give up or change.

It may be a decision you will be faced with if things don't calm down for

you. Meds do help us, but without changes, they can't do it all. I'm not

lecturing, honest. I just want you aware that you may be faced with making

some of these lifestyle changes to get where you want to be health wise. I

know I had to, I fought it for a long time, but since making certain changes

to lessen the stress in my life, there has been a big difference in how

quickly the changes have come to my health. Just something to tuck away and

look at when your ready. ;-)

Take care,

Jody

Dear Chantelle,

A short while ago you were thinking that your mail was not going through--have

you found the problem?

As I was writing to Ellen, I was not sure I had responded to your email, so

here it is!!

I hope that you are feeling better, too. It sounds like you have some good

appts. lined up and that your hard (and frustrating) work has paid of in terms

of OSDP (is that the right order?) and getting the assistance you need and want

to make your life better.

Also, I hope that you know that all of your posts, the answers and comments to

the parents' questions also help me in my work. Thank you for sharing all your

" stuff " !
