My friends husband, who keeps bees, has offered to give us all the

honey he has harvested and stored up for his own family for the winter

in order to help my daughter who is on the SCD. I just read some of

the archived posts here about honey and now I am wondering if we

should use it.

the honey looks fairly clear to me but one of the jars he gave us has

the comb in it. I don't think he pasteurizes it or anything. I think

it's just raw. In fact the last jar we used had 2-3 tiny flakes of

the comb in it. My daughter seems to be doing well. She does take

Pentasa though so wonder if that could mask anything that might show

up if she weren't taking it.

It sure is yummy though.

Thanks

,I don't think it's legal. This is from Elaine's website,Bee Pollen

Illegal

Pollen is irritating

to a damaged gut. Clear, pure, pasteurized honey is okay.

Cloudy honey (still containing the pollen) should be avoidedBest wishes,Kim H.husband, , CD 1999, SCD 2002

The BTVC book should take precedence over the web site. I have a copy of BTVC 10th anniversary edition - 2004. In chapter #10 " The Specific Carbohydrate Diet " under Additional instructions there is a heading HONEY that says " This is the sweetener of choice. Although many health claims are made for various enzymes, pollen and other substances to be in the honey, it is preferred that, when on this diet, you use a honey which is fairly clear when held up to the light. A slightly cloudy appearance is all right. Pasteurized honey from the store, as well as honey bought from the beekeeper, is fine "

The claim that cloudy honey should be avoided is not from the book and was added later. The SCD diet allows slightly cloudy honey. The goal is to keep things out of the gut that have to be digested in the intestine or are not digested. These foods that are not readily adsorbed in the intestine will feed the feed the bad bugs, causing inflammation in the gut, keeping food from being adsorbed and providing more food for the bad bugs, spinning the cycle along.

Best of luck to you.
