Guest guest
Most of the cheese I pick up at the supermarket has " annato " added for color. Is this okay? Does anyone know of a brand of Maple Extract that is legal? The one at our supermarket doesn't have sugar in it but it does say " Natural Flavors. " Whatever that means. Natural flavors is on the illegal list and can contain a whole littany of interesting ingredients such as MSG (and other neurotoxins) and is anything BUT natural. The food/chemical industry has some a masterful job at hiding things under the natural flavors umbrella. The term that's used is " nature identical " which is the chemical equivalent to the natural ingredient. There are several books on the subject. I think I'd be up the proverbial creek with no visible means of propulsion if I had to go for annato-free cheddar! >> Does anyone know of a brand of Maple Extract that is legal? Guest guest
Hi , As Marilyn said, annato is legal. I do my best to avoid it though. The only cheese I've ever seen it in is cheddar so I just buy white cheddar, which doesn't have it. I've also hunted high and low for a legal maple extract and haven't found one yet. Hi , I have been using maple extract that I ordered from Faerie's Finest (http://www.faeriesfinest.com/). I contacted them prior to ordering and they confirmed that there were no additives. I have used it since beginning SCD with no ill effects. Kathy UC since 12/05 SCD since 7/07 med-free, symptom-free since 7/

Just curious - how do you get maple flavor without the sugar added in? Is it distilled or something? Mara

" So, I guess without a detailed chemical analysis it would be hard to determine the structure ... but I thought maple extract was something mentioned in BTVC (i.e., maple extract + honey as a pancake syrup replacement). Maybe since it's an oil, it doesn't contain sugar ... or it's a compound like honey? As with anything SCD, though, if in doubt, leave it out! I can just say that my personal experience with this has been okay. Kathy
