Hi Debbie,

The woman at the Herbal store I buy my supplements at told me women over 40

should change from 2:1 calcium to 1:2 magnesium. She is looking for the

article for me, but I have no idea if she will find it or when.

This supplement has made a world of difference in me regarding the pain in

my muscles and feet! Too bad I dragged my feet for so long adding it to my

regime of daily pills!

Debbie -

I am definitely not an expert, but I can give a little help. For the Ca/Mg,

you should be able to take more during your period if you want. I take

1000mg Ca and 600mg Mg daily and the 1000mg Ca is still below the RDA.

I think the Ester-C and Vit. C in the B complex are doing the same thing.

The " Ester " just means that it is ph-balanced and time-released so it gives

you more C over a period of time. But I think 1500mg may be too high for

taking every day. Maybe just take the Ester-C.

Selenium is good for autoimmune diseases in general - I've seen 200 mcg

recommended.

As for the folic acid, I know that the limit from the FDA is to keep folic

acid from all sources under 1 mg. I don't know what the 1 mg. prescription

is for, but if your doc prescribed them, I'd give him/her a call and ask if

the extra 400mg (plus whatever you would be getting from food sources) is

OK.

Copper is also supposed to be good for hyperthyroids. Turns out a lot of

hypers have a copper deficiency. I for one didn't know that anemia could

also be caused from copper deficiency as well as iron deficiency. I believe

the recommended amount is 4 mg, but I know people who take up to 10 mg. Iron

and copper work together, so if you take iron without copper, the iron will

actually deplete the copper you have, so start with copper. After that's

built up, then supplement iron if you need in a ration of about 5:1 iron to

copper.

I didn't buy into all this vitamin and supplement theory either. The only

time I ever took vitamins was when I was pregnant. But after doing it for 2

months, my FT4 went from slightly elevated back down to normal range, so I

became a believer. I'm supposed to get my labwork done again this month and

I haven't been very diligent about taking my vits. during the holiday

season, so it will be interesting to see if the FT4 has gone up or stayed

about the same.

Good luck - do you feel like you should open your own pharmacy yet? I know

sometimes I feel like my kitchen is really a drug store!

Hi ,

I have a couple of questions for you...

>>>As for the folic acid, I know that the limit from the FDA is to keep

>>>folic acid from all sources under 1 mg. I don't know what the 1 mg.

>>>prescription is for, but if your doc prescribed them, I'd give him/her a

>>>call and ask if the extra 400mg (plus whatever you would be getting from

>>>food sources) is OK.<<<

Can you tell me more about the FDA saying to keep folic acid under 1 mg. ?

If that is the case, how come they have it in 400 mg? What can it do to you

if you are taking more? I take a Vit. E 400 IU that also has 2 mg B-6; 6

mg. B-12 and 400 mg. of Folic Acid...for the % of daily values it says they

are all 100% (Except the E which is 1333%).

I thought I had read here and other places that there should be a ratio

between the copper/selinium (I haven't started either of these yet, but am

contemplating doing so soon)...how does the iron come in here? I try to

stay away from added Iron as I know those of us on hormone replacement meds

have to be very careful, if we choose to take iron to not take it for

several hours after taking our hormone dose.

(Plus Iron constipates me terribly!)

I do take 2 grams of Vit. C a day and 10 grams at the first sign of a

cold...but never all at one time, I would probably void it out to quickly if

I did.

As a side note, when I first started my ca/mg supplement, I doubled the dose

(4 a day!) and ended up with diarhea, which I blamed on something else. I

do find with the reg. dose and 200 mg. of Vit. D... though I am only getting

600 mg. of Calcium a day through supplements.

I know you have really been researching this stuff and would appreciate your

input! On other boards I tell people about your success in treating your gd

with supplements and how well your doing.

As for having a pharmacy...LOL...my lazy susan is full! Am going to have to

get out by BIG weekly pill caddy so I can space things out properly.

Oh...when you take your supplements, do you take them all at one time? I

have been with the few I am currently taking, but do not take them close to

my TRH/ATD/BP pills <sigh>...this really makes me sound sick but I am

feeling so much better!

Thanks for all the info and anymore you can give me.

Jody

Oops, sorry Jody, stupid GD brain! I meant to write 400mcg instead of 400mg!

Makes a big difference! The folic acid is usually measured in mcg. I can't

remember where I originally read the guidelines, but here is a site that

talks about it as well:

http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/wh-folic.html

The important exerpts from this page are:

***** Text from web site *****

FDA Action:

In keeping with the recommendations of PHS and the FDA Food Advisory

Committee called to study these issues, the Food and Drug Administration is

requiring that folic acid be added to specific flour, breads and other

grains. These foods were chosen for fortification with folate because they

are staple products for most of the U.S. population, and because they have a

long history of being successful vehicles for improving nutrition to reduce

the risk of classic nutrient deficiency diseases.

These fortified foods include most enriched breads, flours, corn meals,

rice, noodles, macaroni and other grain products.

Under the terms of the new rule:

Fortification levels will range from 0.43 milligrams to 1.4 mg per pound of

product.

Fortification of grain products at these levels will allow the daily intake

from all sources to remain below the recommended upper limit of 1 mg per

day.

The amount of folic acid that will be consumed through foods fortified at

these levels is considered safe for all population (age/gender) groups.

Manufacturers will be allowed to make claims on the labels that the

fortified products contain folic acid and that adequate intake of the

nutrient may reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

FDA also emphasizes that adequate levels of folic acid, in the form of

folate, can be obtained by eating natural sources such as:

Leafy dark green vegetables

Legumes (dried beans and peas)

Citrus fruits and juices

Most berries

In addition, women can assure adequate intake by taking dietary supplements

containing folic acid.

The new rule takes account of the finding in PHS' recommendation that total

folate consumption should be kept under 1 mg per day. This is because higher

intake may complicate the diagnosis of pernicious anemia, one form of

vitamin B12 deficiency, which especially affects older people.

Pernicious Anemia & Recommended Daily Limit:

Because the effects of high intakes of folic acid are not well known, but do

include complicating the diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency, care should be

taken to keep total folate consumption under 1 mg per day, except under the

supervision of a physician.

About 10 to 20 percent of the elderly are diagnosed as having low vitamin

B12 levels.

The effects of folic acid at levels between 1 and 5 mg are not well known,

but include complicating the diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Among persons with pernicious anemia, one form of vitamin B12 deficiency,

adverse effects have been reported with daily intakes of 5 mg folic acid and

above.

Because FDA has a mandate to set fortification levels that are safe for all

population groups, lack of long term data makes it impossible to conclude

that continuous intakes of 1 mg or more daily would be safe.

The FDA rule is designed to keep total folic acid intake under the 1 mg

level

***** End included text *****

Now, the FDA plays it fairly conservative, and probably nothing would happen

if Debbie took the 1 mg + 400 mcg., but I figure since the doc prescribed

the 1 mg. for a reason, he/she would probably be able to determine if that

is too much for her. Check your bottle again, Jody, did it say 400mg or mcg?

I know I've read it wrong myself before. It would be nice if they were all

measured in consistent units.

I haven't heard about a ratio for copper and selenium. I usually see that

the copper/iron/zinc all depend on each other and so the balance between

them must be maintained. The iron and copper work together to form the

hemoglobin, so too much of one can deplete the other. Supposedly a 5:1 ratio

of iron to copper is good for hypers. The zinc ratio needs to be lower than

typical for hypers, between 1 and 5 mg of zinc per mg of copper. But zinc is

most suspect for hyper symptoms, so if you start to feel hyper, back down

own the zinc, and only start zinc after the copper and iron are built up. I

was already high in zinc, so I don't take any yet myself. I know a lot of

people who take their Vit. C like you do...so much a day and then more when

they have a cold or something. I have been told this is the " preferred "

method of doing it as opposed to taking mega doses on a daily basis. As for

the Ca/Mg - it was probably the extra magnesium that did it when you doubled

the dose. Mg can cause diarrhea (like we need that!)

As for when I take them, I try to space them out during the day. I take the

Ca/Mg in the morning because you shouldn't take the iron with that for

optimal usage. I also take a 50mg B complex (with 400mcg of folic acid), 500

mg Vit. C, and 2 mg copper in the morning. Then I take 100mg selenium, 18 mg

iron at lunch and 2 mg copper and 100 mg Mg after dinner. I find the extra

100mg of Mg helps my heart rate and helps me sleep taken after dinner. I was

very naughty about not taking them regularly over the holiday with the

changed schedule and all, so now I'm trying to get back in the habit!

In the lazy susan - oh, I wish I could keep mine there! The baby would have

then all out in a minute! I'm going to have to clean out a cupboard or

something to put all mine in! With all vits and hubby's diabetic stuff, our

kitchen island masquerades as a medicine cabinet. And that doesn't count all

the insulin in the fridge with the eggs! Sigh, hubby and I have decided it's

hell to get old!

Oops, sorry Jody, stupid GD brain! I meant to write 400mcg instead of 400mg!

Makes a big difference! The folic acid is usually measured in mcg. I can't

remember where I originally read the guidelines, but here is a site that

talks about it as well:

The important exerpts from this page are:

Hi Debbie,

First, how are you feeling, and how is your dad doing? I have a post from

you to answer yet, unless I did...LOL can't remember anything right now.

Elaine had told me about the ratio of ca/mg being 1:2 and when I went to buy

it, the lady at the Herbal store also told me about women over 40 should be

doing this. We have a great Herbal store here now and I could spend a

fortune in there.

I know about the feet Debbie, I use to sit in bed with coffee (that hubby

brought me when he woke me up) every morning for at least a half hour before

even going to the bathroom because I knew as soon as my feet hit the floor

it was going to hurt. Some mornings it would bring me to tears. I don't

have that anymore. I have noticed once in a while they may be tender first

thing but are fine by the time I am done with morning routine. This ca/mg

has made a huge huge difference in me!!! My tablets are 300 mg calcium and

600 mg. of magnesium and I take 2 of them along with a half of a vitamin D

pill. That is 400 mg. but the Herb woman told me to only use half with each

one. It did take a few days for me to really notice a huge difference, but

first time taking it, my thighs and arms did feel better about an hour or 2

later.

When are you coming <whining> ;-)

you to answer yet, unless I did...LOL can't remember anything right now.

TTYL

Jody

Jody -

Old eyes, hah! From what you say, yours are better than mine by a longshot!

Especially after today's visit and subsequent lens increase. My hubby tells

me I got to the eye line last, and I had to take what was left!

, who'd trade you eyes any day, even with the GO!

>(also B-12) they are both mcg. It's these old eyes of mine LOL.

Hi Jody,

So, you should actually take more magnesium than calcium?

My muscles still hurt and feet but not like they were. For a while there I

thought I was going to be a cripple.
