Guest guest
Poor you! I know how it feels, I had this for several years. Not sleeping makes your digestion worse ... so yes nuts can be tricky. Something that helped me was magnesium (google on: sleep magnesium). Lots of it! You take it with your evening meal because it is best absorbed at around 10 pm. (You might have to try different brands, until you find one that works for you). Since I started on this diet I have woken up twice very early. I think it is because I am eating lots of yogurt and that means more calcium = less magnesium (they are supposed to be balanced) so I am glad you wrote because it reminded me to start taking magnesium again. My friend, a woman's doctor, has told me that magnesium deficiency is as common in women as calcium deficiency and they are both important for bone density. hope you get some good rest! Cecilia Insomnia Problems Hello Everyone:Has anyone experienced severe insomnia? I only sleep a few hours a night. I don't have trouble falling asleep but once I wake up, anywhere from 11:30 to 2:00ish, I can't fall back asleep and when I do, it's only for an hour. Are there any SCD foods or supplements that would help? Are there any SCD foods that prevent one from a good night sleep, like nuts for example? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much,GERDS and chronic C (and insomnia)SCD 6 months
Guest guest
Thank you so much Cecilia: I will try more magmesium. The problem with that however is that it gives me lots of heartburn as I have GERDS but I'll give it a try anyway. It might have to be a fine balance! like everything else in this diet... Thanks again, GERDS and chronic C. Been meaning to mention this on the list. My latest health challenge is that I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea. What you describe is similar to my issues, although I have added joint pain which wakes me. When I did a sleep test, it turns out that my blood oxygen was dipping down as far as 80% (normal is greater than 94%). They call this a " desaturation " and what happens is you wake, move, take a deeper breath, and your oxygen goes back up. You can also have apneas, where your throat muscles become so relaxed that they close off the airway and you stop breathing for a moment. Then you move, the airway opens, and you resume breathing. There are also " hypopneas " which are the same as apneas, except the throat only closes about halfway. Interestingly, my reading indicates that sleep apnea can be related to plenty of health issues, including IBS/IBD symptoms. Which makes a certain amount of sense -- if the gut isn't getting adequate oxygen when you're sleeping, it's likely to get quite cranky. So's the rest of the body. So you might want to consider asking your PCP or other health care practitioner for a sleep test. Guest guest
Hi . Have you ever tried melatonin? I took it for many years to help me get to sleep, because my endocrine system doesn't appear to have melatonin-manufacturing capabilities. At times it was hard to get hold of melatonin, because the federal government banned its sale in Canada. I'm not sure whether it's legally available here. I used to buy it in the USA while visiting friends. Have you ever tried 5-HTP? It's a metabolite of L-tryptophan. I took it for many years to help me stay asleep once I fell asleep. Before 5-HTP, I tried L-tryptophan, but my body didn't metabolize it correctly, so its effectiveness was limited. 5-HTP can be found over-the-counter in health food stores, but I prefer to get mine compounded on prescription. 5-HTP also helps with mood issues. In addition to these supplements, I took prescription sedatives or sleeping pills at various times, because my insomnia was so bad. I also take magnesium in the evening, in the form of a calcium-magnesium compound, a magnesium and malic acid tablet, and in magnesium-hydroxide capsules. These are supposed to help with sleep as well. I don't take melatonin or 5-HTP to help me sleep currently, as my health insurance has, reluctantly but graciously, been covering the cost of a very expensive sleep medication for me, one that always gets me to sleep and usually gives me a lot of deep (stage 3 and 4) sleep. The medication is called Xyrem. It's the sodium salt version of gamma hydroxide butyrate (GHB). GHB apparently used to be sold in health food stores at a reasonable cost, until some nasty men discovered that it could be used, similar to Rohipnol, as a means of drugging women in preparation for raping them. There is no way that Xyrem could be disguised in a drink, because of its high sodium content, which gives a very salty taste to the water it's mixed with. Xyrem is only prescribed by a very few doctors and only distributed by a small number of pharmacies in Canada (and is similarly strictly controlled in the USA). It is currently approved for the treatment of narcolepsy and is being studied as a treatment for fibromyalgia (FMS). I am hoping that eventually Xyrem will reduce the severity of my FMS. Ironically, as I lose weight in the form of fat padding around my bones and joints on SCD, I experience more pain while sleeping. I had no idea that weight loss could actually make me hurt more. The pain often interrupts my wonderful Xyrem-induced sleep. I need to find a non-toxic pad to top my firm latex mattress, so that I don't hurt as much at night. I've ruled out memory foam pads because of the odours they emit. But I don't know what else is available that is as effective as a cushion yet totally chemically safe for me. Guest guest
I certainly can relate to waking up at midnight to 2:00 am, and having problems going back to sleep again. This problem seems to accompany digestive disorders, by the way. Some nights I just wake up, other nights I get hit with a bunch of symptoms that occur regularly. It's difficult falling asleep again regardless, so I tend to cat-nap until my alarm goes off. I haven't found a solution yet. I generally stop eating at 7 pm, which helps me fall asleep, and I don't eat anything too hard to digest after 3 pm. I also take my daily magnesium dose at 8 pm, which helps me relax. Falling asleep isn't the hard part -- it's staying asleep! I've talked about this nightly wakefulness issue with my doctors. They've offered several suggestions, but nothing has helped so far. My gastroenterologist says that our digestive system resets itself around 2 am, particularly in the upper GI, a set number of hours after you stop eating. Some of us become oversensitive to fluctuations in our digestive system, and this wakes us up. Another doctor says it's probably due to a blood sugar drop (explaining the panic attacks), so I should eat something before going to bed, or get up and eat something at 2 am. The problem for me is that my nausea levels are bad at 2 am, so the last thing I want to do is eat something. So, I haven't found a solution. I try different things periodically, but nothing has helped. I just cope as best I can. If it's any help, a lot of us with digestive malfunctions experience the same thing. I find the Weather Channel puts me to sleep nicely at 3 am [grin]... Kim M. SCD 5 years > > Hello Everyone: > > Has anyone experienced severe insomnia? I only sleep a few hours a > night. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for all your suggestions. I will certainly try some of them out. I will start with a magnesium supplement before bed and go from there. Perhaps try 5-HTP also. Guest guest
Hi again (I have never tried this myself because where I live Epsom salt is really expensive, but I know it is very cheap in the US... ) anyway... Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate and some people put it in the bath and soak up magnesium through their skin. just an idea if you find supplements difficult Cecilia Re: Insomnia Problems Thank you everyone for all your suggestions.
