Guest guest
Hi Dianne, My little girl Ellie got her hearing aids at 2 1/2 months and I had the same problem you are having. We tried hats but that seemed to make them squeal and we tried the huggies but that just gave her a handle to pull on. So eventually I went to a beauty supple store and bought toupee tape. I would put a small strip behind each ear and they stayed on great. When we would take them off her at night or for naps behind her ear would be a little red but that would go away by the next time we went to put them on. She never developed a rash. And the best thing was that they never flopped around or flipped over her ear. Good Luck. mom to Ellie 3 going on 15. Guest guest
I appreciate everyone's advice. I spoke with Liam's audiologist concerning my frustration and she said that there is a good chance he outgrew his molds. He will get fitted for new ones Thursday, but then we have to wait for them to come in. Until then, I will try some of the suggestions everyone has made. We have the huggies and I can't imagine them staying on at all without them but I will try it too. We have the Critter Clip but took it off the day we got the HAs. I will look into the Safe N Sound clips. The toupee tape is an interesting suggestion - we will try anything! We tried using a hat to keep them on - I asked the audie if a hat would muffle the sound and she didn't seem to think so. Checking it with the testing scope is a good idea too. It is comforting knowing that it isn't something that I am doing wrong! I'm sure this is just the first of the many struggles we will face. Guest guest
Dianne- Don't become anxious that it will be a long struggle to keep Liam in his aids. When earmolds don't fit, they can be uncomfortable, or at least annoying. This may be especially true for Liam, as his ears haven't had the opportunity to " toughen up " (no, he won't develop huge calluses in his ears! the skin will just become used to have the slight pressure of the earmold). Have you been lubricating his molds? When molds are a tighter fit, we have used KY jelly to slide them in (Vaseline, OtoEase and lanolin can also work, but we have the best success with KY, plus you can buy the small tubes that are easy to cart around). When molds are loose and/or when there is feedback, we use OtoFerm to help the molds stick to the ears. A pediatric audiologist is well used to earmolds that are outgrown within minutes. We have gone through times when we have done molds every 10 days or so, depending on Hadley's growth spurts. More often than not, we make impressions every time we pick up new molds, just to be on the safe side. Hadley is now 2 1/2 years and is still flying through molds; our audi just tries different techniques from time to time to get a better fit, but the fact is, her face is changing and her body is growing, so she'll grow out of molds quickly (I'm amazed about the 3 year old who hasn't had new molds in almost a year-- we've done 5 sets in 6 months!). In terms of the adjustment to the aids, you may want to be aware of the sounds in the house when Liam is first starting to wear aids. Hadley was a little older than Liam when she got her first set at 6 months, but we kept things quiet for the first week or two so she would acclimate to the world of hearing. That meant only running appliances at night, not playing music, not being in large groups of people (although she did tolerate a 50 person Easter celebration 5 days after getting them!), using quieter voices, etc. That might be harder to do with another child in the house, but you could incorporate Jack into the game of introducing Liam to sounds. Another approach we took was to spend several of the early days focused on doing some of Hadley's favorite things (at the time, reading, swinging, dancing, and holding her in a baby carrier). With her attention diverted elsewhere, she was less likely to explore her ears. If you become very frustrated with Liam taking off his molds, just remember-- all that practice with adjusting the aids, inserting them over and over, will make you an expert very very quickly! One more thing-- does Liam use a pediatric hook for his aids (the part that connects the mold to the aid, some audis call them tone hooks or J hooks). An adult sized hook will invariably flop the aids over his ears, but a pediatric hook, which is about half the length, will keep them on nicely. Hadley used a pediatric hook until about 2 years. You also might want to check out the book " Not Deaf Enough " by Cavendish. It's one of the few books out there specifically about a child with a mild/moderate loss. Best of luck to you! Guest guest
Thanks for the support! What is OtoFerm? Where can I get it? I have been online and found the book Not Deaf Enough and wondered if it was any good. I will look into getting it. I like the idea of having him fitted when we pick up the new ones. I'll find out about that . Also, as a newbie, I am not familiar with the notes written at the bottom of messeges; ie " Cx26, Siemen Triano SP, AVT " . What does that mean? I'm still learning! Thanks again! Guest guest
Hi Diane, Our daughter Kate, has been aided since she was 4 months old. I can sure sympathize with you about trying to keep those aids in!! Our audiologist gave us samples of most of the items available for securing aids so we could try them out. For us, most turned out to be awkward or uncomfortable ... except: the critter clips (like glasses holders which loop around each aid then clip to clothes) are what we used when leaving the house, and dropping and losing the aids was a real concern - these do tend to be another thing the child can grab onto though. Recently we tried the Safe'n'Sound strap (not clip) to keep her new, bigger aids from flopping, and found that to be really good. I think, unfortunately, while the child is horizontal and rubbing his head all around, you'll just be playing fetch'em a lot Then once he learns to take the aids out and throw them to get your attention you'll be playing find'em AND fetch'em!! Good luck, and welcome to the group - I have learned so much from all the parents here! in CO, mom to: (4.9) - hearing Kate (2.9) - mod/sev bi-lat, digital aids & glasses ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Guest guest
I know exactly how you feel. My son has been going to Pre-Kindergarten since he was 2, but next year he will be going to regular kindergarten. I am dreading this. His teachers now says he will be fine. He has an interperter and she will be moving up with him. I don't know any parents from around here that has a child with deafness. Last year, my son went to school with one but they moved and I don't know where. But maybe I can find someone so he can play with. -- Re: New Member Hi , Welcome to this wonderful group...
