Guest guest
Hi all, I'd really appreciate any advice on eating out in New York on SCD. I'm off there in a few days time and I'm quite worried. What to know to ask for plain fish / steak in a restaurant? What about breakfast - omelettes? Though I think omelettes are sometimes made from a bottle rather than real eggs...? Any handy stuff I ought to keep in mind that will keep me well in the NYC? Pleaseeee..... What to know > to ask for plain fish / steak in a restaurant? What about breakfast - > omelettes? New York is actually pretty easy - since there are lots of diet obsessed people here. The better the restaurant, the easier it will be, IMO. Be very specific about steaks and plain fish - the latter only with oil or butter or ask to speak with the chef. Tell them it is medical. No sauce, etc. Or salads. Or plain grilled chicken breast. The regular drill. I wouldn't try Spanish or Italian, though, since they tend to be sauce oriented. Many restaurants in NY are fusion - cooking trends from here and there. Most restaurants will have fish and steak, however. Check with the maitre d before you enter the restaurant that you will be able to have food made according to your requirements. I had some decent fish recently in the Oyster Bar, in Grand central station at 42nd and Lexington/Park avenues. Not really an elegant restaurant, but a restaurant with a history. Most of the fish there would be fine. Broiled. Or if you eat oysters - very fresh. > > > Though I think omelettes are sometimes made from a bottle rather than > real eggs...? Not in any decent restaurant you go to - or if you have breakfast in your hotel. I've never had that, as far as I know. Eggs are eggs. People in NY are very quality food conscious - they don't want bottled eggs. Eggs are also inexpensive - the bottled ones - usually for people on low fat diets, IME, cost more than regular eggs because they've been tinkered with. You should specify that they cook the eggs in butter. If you are worried about bottled eggs, ask and make sure that is not the case. > Any handy stuff I ought to keep in mind that will keep me well in the > NYC? If you do well with Larabars, since you have been on 8 years and they are advanced, they sell them at Whole Foods and Trader Joes - they're good for emergency snacks. Check the ingredients, though, as not all of them are diet appropriate. (which will be obvious from the flavor - like chocolate/ cocoa, etc.) In many neighborhoods, there are fruit and vegetable venders on the street corners, so you should be able to purchase apples, berries, etc. on the street. Guest guest
Hey Mara, thanks so much for your reply - much appreciated!! > New York is actually pretty easy - since there are lots of diet > obsessed people here. The better the restaurant, the easier it haha - thats great!! so one more won't hurt. > Be very specific about steaks and plain fish - the latter only >with oil or butter or ask to speak with the chef. Tell them it is thanks. it's funny cos in the UK plain means plain. with absolutely nothing - so sometimes the rather poor (?) UK cuisine comes in handy. i was told that restaurants use something called Wondra flour on fish - I've never even heard of it before! > If you do well with Larabars, since you have been on 8 years and >they are advanced, they sell them at Whole Foods and Trader Joes - hey thats fantastic - thanks!! ive not had Larabars but otherwise I'm doing fine on nut bars, after 8 yrs I'm completely in remission so can definitely try them. Is Whole Foods the name of the chain? thanks so much, ulla xx

It's just a brand - but I wonder if Wondra isn't demographically more of a southern thing? I don't believe that is true for grilled fish - rather more delicate white fish that is sauteed rather than grilled in a delicate sauce, but I could be wrong, of course. >> If you do well with Larabars, since you have been on 8 years and >> they are advanced, they sell them at Whole Foods and Trader Joes - > > hey thats fantastic - thanks!! ive not had Larabars but otherwise I'm > doing fine on nut bars, after 8 yrs I'm completely in remission so > can definitely try them. > > Is Whole Foods the name of the chain? Yeah, it's an upscale healthy supermarket. there are several of them around the city - you could also find them at some health food stores or even some groceries. Whole Foods also has a brand of smoked salmon called Spence, if you want to buy a package to eat in your room. It doesn't contain sugar. And is very nice. For example, the ish style. Also the New York style. Mara
Guest guest
well welcome to the big apple!! I didn't respond because I'm petrified at the thought if eating out - maybe in 6 months to a year - just starting to feel ok after 13 months of sickness and 9 1/2 months scd BUT I did have this saved from way back from Gay B on here - hope it helps eileen Restaurant in Brooklyn Zaytoons on Street has SCD compliant food. You can get their platters w/o rice, just ask for extra salad. Tara Gustafson tara.gustafson@... Restaurant in NYC is doing SCD for himself. Café Joul 1070 1st Avenue (between 58th & 59th) New York, 10022 Phone: Fax: http://www.uppereast.com/cafejoul.html http://www.uppereast.com/mediterraneo.html Please call in advance to make sure that the owner will be there and if not ask him to train the other staff members. My husband can prepare most fish and meat in a SCD safe way. Be sure to ask for no Wondra flour on any fish. Many restaurants will add this at the last minute before sauteeing to give the outer layer of the fish some extra little crunch. Also, be sure to remember that special preparation can take extra time in the kitchen and be extremely clear about what you need anywhere you go.
