Girly question.

Hey everyone,

This is kind of an awkward question and I've hesitated to mention it because my momma raised me that there are certain things you don't talk about to strangers -- but I'm not sure where else to ask.

For any men on the list, you may want to skip to the next message. (I love ya Harold but you don't have the right anatomical bits to answer this one!)

Does anyone else suffer from a recurring rash on your, ah, girly bits? This has been going on for at least six months; every few weeks or so I get an extremely uncomfortable inflammation rash on my inner and outer labia. It's not a yeast infection; I've had those in the past and this is something different. There's no discharge or odor, but the skin turns an angry purple red color and it itches like hell. At first I used an OTC cortisone cream and it seemed to clear up within a few days, but it came back the next month and I eventually saw a dermatologist, who told me these things sometimes happen and it was nothing to worry about. He prescribed a cortisone cream that worked much more effectively than the OTC one, but I can't keep running to the doctor every time the rash reoccurs (for one thing, the closest dermatologist in my insurance plan is an hour's drive away). It's starting to drive me insane. I'm back to using the OTC ointment (the one percent strength) and it hasn't done jack in two days. I itch, and in a very awkward place!

I haven't changed any of my medications recently; I'm on prednisone, bextra and vicodin for pain. All of which I've been taking for years without problem. I also haven't started using a new soap or new laundry detergent or anything that might be causing this. I wear normal cotton panties and practice normal daily hygiene. I just can't think of what the problem could be, so now I'm wondering if anyone else with rheumatoid arthritis has run into this.

Aside from going to a GYN, I would ask if you have had strep lately. Last year I had strep throat and within a week I had a perianal rash that they determined through testing was strep related as well. Mine was further back....looked like a bad diaper rash between the cheeks and crept up to the front some. Itched HORRIBLY! Staph infections also occur in that area. If you haven't been treated with anitbiotics it may help if you have those problems. Cortisone won't help. Also yeast infections don't have to have the classic white discharge or smell funny. They can cause a rash like that as well. The itching seems to me it wouldn't be a RA thing but I am no doctor. I think they should test for strep andstaph though as those can be treated fairly easily and can cause havoc if not treated.

Jenni,

A GYN should look at this. Most GYNs do have other patients with

RA and other autoimmune illnesses. The skin in the region is more

sensitive than other areas. It could be a reaction to some of your

medications, an allergy to something (even a type of sanitary napkin

or a particular deodorant they use on certain brands), or even still

an unusual manifestation of monilial infection. (A yeast)

Hope you feel better soon.
