Jacqui,You should take the antibiotic and the probiotics 2 to 3 hours apart from each other so that the antibiotic doesn't kill the good bacteria.About returning to a normal diet after the antibiotics....I can't say whether the SIBO is likely to return or not. I don't know. However, they tell those with IBD that diet has nothing to do with it which is very obviously not the case. Did they say what caused the SIBO? I've only read a little about it but from what I understand there is an underlying cause for it so unless you know what caused it, it's hard to say if it will happen again or not if you return to a regular diet.Best wishes,Kim H.husband, , CD 1999, SCD 2002

I have been suffering with IBS for about 4 years and have been doing

SCD since June. I had a colonoscopy which was totally fine and finally

my doctor did a SIBO test yesterday and I tested positive.

I am now taking xifaxan for the next ten days and am worried about it

killing all the good bacteria. Should I increase my yogurt

consumption? Right now I take one acidophilus capsule daily and eat

about a cup of yogurt. Is there anything else I should do in addition

to this?

Also, I specifically asked the nurse (doctor was not present) about

diet and she seemed to indicate that most likely after the course of

antibiotics I can return to a normal diet. ly I am scared to

because I know how much SCD has helped in these past few months. Is it

likely that the SIBO will return if I do not continue SCD??

Thanks for your help.

I've been on several short courses of Xifaxin since being on SCD. It's one of the easiest antibiotics to tolerate, or so I've found. Still, you should continue your probiotics during the time you're also taking Xifaxin, and make sure of your timing. You want to wait two hours after taking Xifaxin before taking acidophilus or eating yogurt; and if it's possible, wait two hours after taking the probiotic before taking another dose of Xifaxin. This method will ensure you are continually replacing the beneficial bacteria that will be killed off by the Xifaxin.

Expect your digestion to be more tempermental and sensitive during the time you're also taking antibiotics. If you have yeast/candida issues, then you should also be careful with your food choices, to avoid or limit the foods that feed the yeast (sugars, molds, starches, fermented).

You should be able to go back to your normal SCD diet after the Xifaxin is over. I'd continue taking some extra probiotics for a few weeks afterwards as well.

Do you have a few foods that you notice your digestion doesn't tolerate too well? You might need to cut these suspect foods out of your menu for a few months, let your body focus more on rebuilding your gut ecology than trying to digest foods it isn't ready for. Remember it takes a while to rebuild our gut ecology, and heal.

Sometimes antibiotics are necessary. Just means that we have to take precautions during and afterwards.

Thanks for the advice on timing the Xifaxan and yogurt/probiotics. I

really want this to work so I am trying to do anything I can to help

the good bacteria and kill off the bad guys.

And thanks for mentioning that digestion can be tempermental while

taking the antibiotic. I guess I was hopeful for immediate relief

but unfortunately that hasn't been the case :) Maybe I should go

back to the intro diet for awhile while I'm healing.
