Because I've had a really acid stomach problem for a few weeks, my doctor is having me do a colonoscopy/endoscopy. I am both terrified of the anasthesia and of the colonoscopy prep. I know only I can get over the anasthesia fear. Are there things I can do to prevent getting sick from the "prep" stuff?Ask for a prescription for osmoprep - it's a bottle of pills, which you swallow with a permitted liquid of your choice, water, seltzer, ice tea, etc. It's the easiest way. Cost me about $70 something bucks - not covered by insurance, but worthevery minute, since I was never able to tolerate the other stuff and they madethe experience much worse. Can you still take probiotics on the day before???Does anyone have any advice?I've been otherwise totally healthy- little to no symptoms these past years- but this scares me. Psyche yourself into it. The pills are much less awful to the system, so the prepis way less unpleasant. (The last person I know who ignored my advice on this was pretty sorryafterwards - since she found the liquid deeply nauseating. <vbg>)\Mara

Don't be terrified of the anethesia. It really isn't bad at all.

At least in my experience, I am pleasantly in and out of things, and

the colonoscopy is over seemingly very quickly. It's probably the best

part of the experience.

I have been reading that the prep for the procedure can CAUSE a flare.

Because its not technically necessary, i may just do the endoscopy.

i'm really on the fence. i can't imagine ever going through the hell again of

healing, likely for no reason...the doc figured, " well, while you're knocked

out, lets do both. "

but i can't tolerate steroids or any of the uc drugs so i'm not really thrilled,

now, i'm in a major panic over it.

any experience with flares from this???

Hello:

I don't understand why you would be anesthesized in the first place. I

had a colonoscopy done a few years ago and they didn't put me to sleep,

or even froze anything. It was cold turkey and it wasn't painful at

all. ????

The anesthesia is usually conscious sedation-- a mix of sedative, amnesiac and a narcotic. It is not general anesthesia, which poses more risks. The sedation is extremely safe, with hardly any incidence of adverse reactions. It was the best sleep I've had in a long time. The prep is actually a colonic lavage, and as I read in one post, a lot of people do better after as it cleanses the colon of toxins. I, for one, had no bleeding and normal bowels for 2 months after my procedure. Look at it as a way to have a clean slate and help your gut heal even more by having no nasty bugs and toxins populating your colon.

Dana,You seem to be putting yourself into a panic for no good reason. Try to relax and be calm about it. Exercise or do some yoga or take a walk somewheresoothing. If you are not in a flare now, the likelihood is extremely high you won't be in a flare afterwards. Though you may possibly have some mildish reactions in the following days.If you do, just stay on intro and stage one a few day. You can try those pills I recommended, Osmoprep, or use miralax, which is legal. Thank you!I'm actually having my Dr. prescribe the Osmoprep pills and i'm goiong to forget about all this till Sunday morning. I am actually excited at the prospect of getting a total scope of my insides for sanity's sake. If I can avoid the "anasthesia" and the weird halflytely drink, i think i'm gonna be fine!Thank you all for all of this!!!Dana > Because I've had a really acid stomach problem for a few weeks, my doctor is> having me do

Dana,

I totally understand your fear. I too am terrified of the prep and

the colonoscopy myself. I was supposed to do it about now (but some

other health issues popped up and once I get a handle on those I will

proceed)

I think Mara's suggestion for the Osmoprep is totally spot on.

Also, in my experience you totally want the sedation. You won't

remember a thing. If I read correctly you have UC? It's important to

be monitored with Colitis.

One of the reasons I am beyond traumatized is because I had no

sedation with my first colonoscopy when I was 17. It was horrible.

From what I understand they don't practice this way anymore.

Take a deep breath- get all the stuff ready and schedule the

colonoscopy when everything is in place- SCD food wise and prep wise.

Be sure to let us know how you're feeling..

Good luck!

Hi Dana, I want to let you know you don't have to be knocked out for the colonoscopy. Here they just give an IV Valium and it was great. I actually enjoyed the show. The doctor showed me the tour of my colon and where the crohn's was and played with the little ville and showed me they were healthy so I didn't have celiac. It was interesting and pain free. I highly recommend the Valium IV. Let us know how it goes.

I cancelled the colonoscopy. Doc said it was really not needed right now. One

day yes, now, not necessary.

I did my first one with no sedation at all and no painkillers at all. Hows that

for crazy. I prefer it that way. I do not want to be knocked out.

Cancelling the endoscopy too, I think.

Literally, I can make myself sick in the anxiety about this.

Ugh, not sure what i'm gonna do, but leaning toward nothing at all.

have the day to decide.

need clarity for a happy holiday.

:(

Thank you for all this help and encouragement.

I have a decision to make...!

except starving from midnight the night before and I think maybe

Last year I had the endoscope and colonoscopy done at the same time. The prep was the worse for me.
