Guest guest
Pam, If I could do it all over again, I'd have to say that I wish the diet was the first thing we would have tried. It's too bad it wasn't offered. Of course, at that point, I was naive and thinking the answer was just to give our daughter the medication and that would make her seizures stop. You can't know that until you try. Those of us who've been through the nightmare experiences could never have seen it coming. My advice to you would be not to discontinue the medication....... if you're concerned about it not helping (or not well enough anyway) after only 12 days, you need to call and bug the neuro's office until you get a call back from him. Some adjustments can be made. I'm not a fan of Depakote but 12 days doesn't seem long enough to know for sure. Diet-wise, I think there are some changes you could make to his diet now that would help...... and would not interfere with seizure medications, but just could possibly help. I would cut out ALL sugar and refined flour, all artificial colorings, flavorings, preservatives and ALL hydrogenated oils..... this would include " partially hydrogenated " ANYthing. That is trans-fat..... and just absolutely ROTTEN for the the human diet. It should be considered poison. Try to move his diet over to fresh, whole foods......meats, eggs, veggies, fruits. More natural good fats such as butter (organic if possible), olive oil, and foods that contain good fats..... nuts, avacados, etc. Don't use nut butters that contain hydrogenated oil..... buy the natural kind with the oil on top that you have to stir in. Avoid ALL Nutrasweet (aspartame).... that is often a seizure trigger....... and MSG (monosodium glutamate). You have to read up on MSG (do a net search) to find out how to sleuth it out on labels..... manufacturers have sneaky ways they're allowed to slip it into foods. MSG is a neurotoxin and you'll find it is in just about all packaged, pre-made foods..... canned, frozen (except for plain frozen veggies) or boxed. This probably sounds like a lot of changes to make...... but you certainly wouldn't have to get your doctor's OK to change his diet in these healthy ways. Another diet approach to look into is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (or SCD). It's a little more restrictive.... though not as much as the Keto diet.... but is very healthy and is currently giving my daughter better seizure control than we had in our final months on Keto. It's also a diet that you could do on your own, without medical supervision, and you could keep the meds in place for now, perhaps weaning them away later with your doctor's okay. For more info on SCD, go to www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info . I know this must be a tough time for you right now..... it's so hard to know what to do and why it's all happening. My almost 7 yr old daughter has had seizures since early infancy, so I'm used to this being a part of our lives now, but I remember how scary it was at first..... and how frustrating all the drug trials were. No drug ever worked for us. You want the best for your child. Just hone your instincts and stay true to them. I think the only " damage " that absence seizures really cause is that they interrupt the learning process so much. If he's having a lot of them, it will make learning nearly impossible. I don't think there is any concern of actual permanent brain damage from that type of seizure. Seizures do seem to breed more seizures, though, too..... so you definitely want to get them under control. Patti, mom to Katera, former Keto Kid for over 2 yrs, now on SCD 4 months and doing very well. ----- Original Message ----- Hello, I am new to this group. I am also new to seizure disorders. I am getting a crash course tho. My 7yo son, , began having seizures (probably absence or atypical abs) about 4 weeks ago.

Because I am fairly new to the Keto program, I cannot vouch for whether it follows the Hopkins protocol. What constitutes " goes by the Hopkins protocol? " Again, I can only say that she seems to follow " the book " very closely and we were pleased. > Have you heard anything about Kosair and > how their keto team is? Nothing directly; however, we hear the best about Dr. Puri and look forward to working with him as we try and reduce or end TomTom's seizures. Guest guest
You only work 32 hours a week!!!??? I just had to comment - someone who has 4 children, one who is HI and requiring so many sessions per week and can fit in 1 hour of (paid) work a week would be a super Mom - you must be an absolutely super doopa Mom! I struggle to keep up with my 2 kiddies and am dreading returning to my typing work (which I do from home) in mid January coz I already have hardly any spare time. I do not know how you do it! Kerryn (, 3, mod; , 4 months, hearing) (...I have 4 children 13,11 and 9 year old boys who are all hearing and involved in various activities and then we have our 22 month old daughter who has a severe to profound loss bilaterally due to bacterial menigitis. Just when I thought that things could not get any more hectic with her, we just decided to do a CI for her also. .... But there are many days in our house just like yours I really don't think there is enough time in the day. Yes, both and I have to work(though I work only 32 hours a week) to make ends meet and then we have to try to keep the boys moving and then she has speech twice a week, physical therapy twice a week, O.T. once a week, DOH teacher once a week and then we have a deaf mentor that comes twice a month that will teach us sign language. )
Guest guest
Get all of the "illegal" food out of the house if you can't control yourself. Then it can't happen. Chuck New to Group Hi. My name is Jen. I wanted to introduce myself. I’m a stay at home mom of 3 kiddos and live in St. Louis, Missouri. I’m re-committing myself to SBD tomorrow. I’ve been “trying” for almost two weeks. I am having a lot of difficulty giving up my usual sweets. What I’ve found is that I need to set an alarm in the afternoon so that I stop and eat. By time I remember to stop and actually put thought into what’s going into my mouth, it’s too late. I’ve ate everything in my path! LOL! Anyway, I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Guest guest
---HI! I am also relatively new to group. I do not post often but wanted to say hello and welcome. I have Hashimoto's disease and am doing ok for now. Going to have an ultrasound done in Dec. to check out the goiter that the disease brought on. I also take a lot of natural supplements and goiter seems to have shrunk some, hopefully smaller or gone before Dec. Just to let you know a lot of people have had great success by adding supplements to what they are already doing even with cancer. First let me say I do not sell what I am going to share with you. If you would like you can go to shaklee.com and have a look at what they have to offer, they have been around for many many years and their products are ALL natural, there are no pesticides even put on any food they put into their products. Check out Optiflora and Nutriferon and their basics. By searching their sight out good you may learn something that could possibly be a help to you. May God bless you as you deal with this illness. Guest guest
(((((((Carma))))))) so pleased to see you again!Happy that the thyrophoenix website has helped you .This support group will too, with your questions, etc... Armour is a prescription thyroid hormones that is created from desiccated pig thyroids. It contains T4, T3, T2 and T1, plus calcitonin....all which the healthy human thyroid produces, and which the body needs.Synthroid is manufactured T4 only drug. There are some who are taking the generic armour(natural)that have excellent results in regaining themselves. Feel free to vent or exult...to ask questions, or to share your experiences... and be prepared for questions, such as labs, etc.... hugs ThyroFeisty(Feisty)Proud group co-ownerwww.thyrophoenix.comI like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals. Sir Winston ChurchillBritish politician (1874 - 1965) new to group I have just joined the group. I came accross thyrophoenix.com and I couldn't stop reading. I am amazed at how many ailments I have that are related to thyroid disease. I had hyperthyroidism and recieved radio-active iodine treatment and now have hypothyroidism along with graves disease. I suffer from depression, obesity, mood swings, constipation, headaches, short term memory loss, extreme fatigue, etc etc etc. You have such a vast amount of knowledge on this site and on thyrophoenix.com that I believe it is going to take me a lifetime to grasp it all. I was beginning to feel like a hypocondriac(?) with all that is wrong with me. I do have one question. I seem to have missed where I can find "Armour"? I am on synthroid and have been for 12 years- ever since I had RAI treatment. Regardless of how hard I try, I can not loose weight. I do a great job of gaining weight though. Thank you for being here - for caring for fellow sufferers enough to have these sites. You along with another group I belong to are an answer to a long unaswered prayer. Guest guest
Hi, Carma.. I'm really happy that you found the Phoenix site to be helpful... a lot of work has gone into it... and I'm still hoping to expand on it... (I'm ThyroGeek on the website, along with ThyroFeisty, we are the ThyroMusketeers!!!! fighting thyroid misinformation! hehehehhehe) Sounds like the Synthroid isn't doing the job for you... How is your doc about changing? A lot of docs have been brainwashed into buying into the 'synthetic is better' bandwagon when if fact there are really only a small percentage of thyroid victims that do well on it. To start out... do you have your current labs for us to check out? Taking a look at those will let us know what your doc has been testing and how your body is responding to what you are taking now, and if the dose is even sufficient.. that will tell us more clearly if it's the synthetic that you aren't responding to, if your conversion isn't adequate, or if you are being underdosed. Questions to start with.... What is your current dose? How long have you been on it? Have they told you about how to take it, empty stomach, etc? What supplements are you taking in addition to the med? Are you aware of goitrogens and do you avoid them (the two worst being soy and high fructose corn syrup)? That's enough to start with... get ready for more! hehehe Topper () On Fri, 02 Dec 2005 09:29:26 -0000 "Carma" writes: I have just joined the group. Guest guest
You're TSH is on the low side.. which may or may not be good.... it would be better to see what your thyroid hormones are doing, TSH is a pituitary hormone, and doesn't give all the info that we really need to know how we are doing (and yes, I know I say that 20 times a day, but its a really important thing to ingrain in our brains). Taking the Synthroid on a full stomach, after breakfast reduces it's absorption. Even though your TSH is low that could be, but does not have to mean, that your TSH is being suppressed by the Synthroid and your thyroid hormone levels may or may not be at the correct level in their ranges. The bottom line is how you feel. The numbers are a guideline and there are some basics 'rules' that go with them, but regardless of the numbers to goal is to reduce and relieve symptoms. You had RAI for Graves, it's possible that you still have some gland function remaining, depending on the dose, RAI does not always kill all the tissue. With remaining tissue and the Grave's antibodies still stimulating it that could also cause the low TSH. For this... we need the numbers again.... You commented on weight and how hard it is for you to lose.. that can be from a few different things... including your thyroid hormone levels being out of proportion.. for example high T4 and low T3... Lets look closer at how you feel. How is your pulse rate? How are you will temp, body temp and things like feeling hot or cold when others around you feel fine? Soy not only affects thyroid but has a pretty strong affect on increasing cancer risks... you'll have to decide what you want to do about that.... Since soy, and other goitrogens affect how the thyroid function, how the body absorbs replacement hormone and how the hormones are converted.. you have to make some decisions. If you choose to continue eating those items you have to do so consistently and then adjust your meds accordingly... that way you are taking extra meds to compensate for what the goitrogens are doing. Lets bounce things around a bit and see what we can come up with to help you get rid of some of the things that have made you start thinking that you're a hypochondriac.....
