I had 300mg venofer. Recheck ferritin after 3 weeks. I had mine done in a hospital but some docs will do it their office. I didn't have any side effects and levels came right up. What are you taking? Maybe it's not enough.Subject: Need iron IV to raise t3To: RT3_T3 Date: Sunday, January 10, 2010, 6:53 PM

I've looked at bloodwork of past six months, and my t3 seems to have never risen significantly, even when I was overdosed on synthroid and my t4 was very well suppressed (I'm post-thyroid cancer). I'm now on 30 mcg. t3 and labs indicate my ft3 is not going up.

I'm on cortef for AI, so the only thing left to blame this on is low ferritin. My ferritin was 14 to begin with and after months of iron supplementing it is still the same. Hence my question about iron IV.

I've been reading about dfferent types of iron IV; which have people here found to be the most helpful?

What side effects should I look out for?

What kind of doctor/facility would administer such an IV?

Thank you so much!

I'm taking bluebonnet and solgar , about 25-27 mg. per capsule, I take at least 8 capsules a day.

Besides venofer, are there other types of iron iv? I read about different types and have read about nasty side effects, so want to check this out before trying it. Then I'll need to find a doc to do it. My current internist doesn't think I'm anemic, my hemoglobin has gone down to 12 and my ferritin is 15.

thanks for any info!

I think venorfer is the safest and most used nowadays. I was told at the hospital that they do it all day long and most people do not have any problems. I just sat in the chair, eat lunch, and watched tv while the IV drained, then I drove home. My ferritin was stuck at 23 no matter what. Most doctors will only order an IV if hemoglobin is low and supplements are not helping. I was told by one doctor that it was "unethical" to give me an Iv just based on low ferritin. I've had 3 doctors tell me that ferritin needs to be around 70 in order for my body to use thyroid hormones but yet none of them would Rx an IV. One doctor did 6 weeks worth of painful shots.....my levels when checked were 24. I have a good doctor now who knows the hell I've been through and he said he'll Rx an IV every 6 months if I want

it. I am not unhypo yet and my ferritin levels dropped down to 54 within 6 months after the IV, so it's important to keep checking.

How long does an iv drip take? an hour?

Now I need to find me a doc to prescribe the iv. My hemoglobin has dipped to 12, and that is pretty low, yet my internist says it's fine.

Hi Miriam,We might be in a similar situation, except my hemoglobin is at 17.5, which is 0.5 orso above the top range.I hear many people get venofer. I might take it too, soon, if my Ferritin won't go up. I amcurrently aty 125 mg amino ferrochel iron daily. Most docs say that EVERYTHING is fine as long as it's within the normal ranges. Idiocy! And for those of you who know: How does it work with Ferritin? Does having a lowhemoglobin mean that the person has a near zero (or zero) Ferritin? I know Ferritinis _iron storage_ but where is the iron stored? Everywhere in the body or in one specialplace? (Ok, that sounded funny.. haha! I am betting on the first!) I just wonder why myhemoglobin is so highw hen my Ferritin has been low for a while. (low 20s)

300mg of venofer took about 1 1/2 hours. Finding a doctor to Rx it is the hard part but they are out there. Maybe a DO who understands ferritin and knows you've tried with the supplements. Subject: Re: Need iron IV to raise t3To: RT3_T3 Date: Monday, January 11, 2010, 3:28 PM

To my understanding, and I am just guessing here, Ferritin will sink to nothing, and onlyTHEN, when Ferritin is "empty" (no iron storag anymore) the body will start eating awayon the blood volume itself.Am I correct? Well. Guess I just have a lot of blood then? Or is my blood high for anotherreason? I need to learn what this is about.. Cause I don't really get this! :)Like.. Can a person have a hemoglobin towards the lower range, and still have HIGH Ferritin?T.

It's possible my ferritin sank to nothing. Latest ferritin labs as of December 24 2009 had a ferritin level of 15 and hemoglobin of 12.8 and red blood cells of 3.76 (lab flagged it as LOW).

Prior to this, on 11/04/09 my ferritin was 36, hemoglobin 12.9, red blood cells 3.87. However, I was not aware of the need to be off iron supplements a few days prior to testing. I have been on iron supplements for a few months now and have started out with a ferritin level of 15 and I'm back at square one.

Suffice it to say, I get comments from my folks that I am very pale.
