Hi !

I'm a 50 year old male with UC for the past 30 years. After a few

rough years, flair-ups have been few and far between. I take a lot of

Asacol and a low dose 6-MP. Over the past year I have had to go on

Prednisone 3 cycles and am now tapering down. Something tells me that

now would be a great time to try the SCD. Any encouragement would be

appreciated.

Two questions.

For (Jewish) religious reasons I am required to eat a few servings of

bread (containing any of the 5 grains) over the Sabbath. Are there

any suggestions of how to accomplish this without outright cheating?

Would it make any difference if the bread servings were spelt or

oats?

I have developed a habit of taking one serving of Metamucil daily to

keep the system moving in all situations. From the literature it

seems like this stuff is highly illegal. Do I go cold turkey or is

there any similar alternative?

Please let me know. Thanks.

Moshe

Hi Moshe. I'm not religious, but I tried following Orthodox Judaism as I

child, many years ago. I seem to recall that any dietary rule can be ignored

if it has a negative impact on a person's health, because being healthy is

more important than adhering to the rules. For instance, when I was still

religious, if I were ill on Yom Kippur, I had to keep taking whatever

medications were required, and thus not fully " fast " on that day.

Many years later, I developed allergies to many foods, including yeast. It

made no sense for me to eat breads leavened with yeast, because they would

make me ill. So I had to forego a lot of traditional foods, such as challah.

Changing your bread to spelt or oats would still not work for SCD, because

no grains are allowed on this diet. If you really want to eat bread on the

Sabbath, you might try to make a grain-free bread, with blanched almond

flour or whatever ingredients you prefer. Bread recipes can be found in

" Breaking the Vicious Cycle " and in various grain-free SCD recipe books, as

well as online at sites such as

http://www.scdrecipe.com/home/

http://www.scdiet.com/

You might even be able to figure out how to twist grain-free batter into

something resembling a challah :-) .

I went cold turkey off Metamucil just before starting on SCD in March. I

drank pure prune juice, diluted with equal quantitities of water, during the

first few weeks, until I was able to start eating almond butter. I would

have stewed prunes, as is recommended for this diet, but I was particularly

weak at the beginning of the diet, so prune juice was easier for me.

Once I started eating nut butters and then nut flours, I had no more

problems with C.

There's a small SCD kosher list that will provide help with the first.

It's not very active, but you might hear a variety of responses.
