Guest guest
Hi Everyone! I am assisting someone with Crohn's to begin the SCD. I have Breaking the Vicious Cycle, Lucy's SCD Cookbook and Cooking to Heal Little Tummies:SCDiet Recipes Kids Will Love. I see the menu for the first few days, but I'm uncertain how to map out appropriate menus to slowly introduce new foods in a balanced nutrition way. Is there a website that contains this or is there someone willing to share their success journey? Also, here's what I understand and please correct me if I'm wrong:1. A yogurt maker is key to simplifying life. I found the Yogourmet, is this the best option? In that price range. Or you can get an excalibur dehydrator (google it) which is handy for a range of food preparation on SCD.It depends on budget and counter space and time (less tinkering) constraints. 2. Can foods be premade, portioned and frozen to be thawed and warmed at a later date?Yes. 3. Other juices are allowed as long as they are pure juice with no added sweetener?Only Knudsen "Just Juices" line and also Kedem Organic grape juice. (Not regular Kedem - that has sugars intensified.)I can see how a support system will be key to success. Does anyone know of a group in the Brooklyn/Boro Park area? The owner of digestive wellness is from Monsey. She might have the answer to the Boro Park question. http://www.digestivewellness.com/Mara
Guest guest
Welcome to the list! You're absolutely right that a good support system is essential. When I started, I was the only SCDer in Louisiana, and the lists like this one were my absolute life-line. I'll post, in a separate message, a " Balance Over Time " article that I wrote. We're so accustomed to every meal, every day, every week needing to be " balanced, " that we sometimes forget to take into account the notion that if our guts aren't ready for the food we're shoveling at them, it won't be broken down, we won't absorb the nutrients, and what isn't digested will continue to feed the bad bacteria which are making us sick. The Yogourmet is the best in its class, although I recommend picking up a dimmer switch to allow you to adjust the temperature. If you are able to afford it, I highly recommend the 9 tray Excalibur dehydrator for ease of use, lack of fiddling with the temperature, and the fact that you can use the Excalibur for an incredible number of of other SCD food preparations as well. Foods absolutely can be pre-made, portioned, and frozen! My husband is a great engineer, but he can burn a mean pot of water! When I went in for cancer surgery earlier this year, I had nearly two months of meals pre-prepared and in the freezer so I could be sure of safe food even if I was too under the weather. (Had the help of my friend Eileen, aka KnitWit, in Baton Rouge for that one!) Kedem Organic grape juice (not regular -- that has sugars added) is permitted. Welch's in the bottle is permitted. The Knudsen " Just Juice " line is permitted. If you want to buy an excellent juicer, like the Omega 8005, and make your own juices without added sweetening, that, too, is permitted. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
