I was hoping I could hear from anyone who had

a myomectomy after UFE. I had UFE a few months ago and my

body is trying to expel a fibroid. It's very painful.

It is being recommended that I have a myomectomy to get

rid of it. Has this happened to anyone?

--------

I had a UFE about 4 years ago. Three months later, I began to have a beige

discharge and, with the start of my next period, 5 days of very severe pelvic

cramping. I suspected that what was happening was that my uterus was attempting

to expel one of the dead fibroids on the inner surface of the uterus. My GYN

was not too concerned, and I later realized, not too experienced either. The

pain stopped after 5 days, although the discharge continued. At my next period,

I expelled, with very little pain, two sizable pieces of beige colored tissue,

about 1 1/2 by 2 inches. Following this, I had no more pain though I continued

to have a discharge on and off for a few months with threads of tissue

continuing to be discharged.

My GYN never suggested doing anything about this, though I later learned that

following two days of pain, a hysteroscopy and D & C could have removed the tissue

and saved me further days of pain.

Can I ask why your doctor feels you need a myomectomy rather than just a

hysteroscopic D & C to remove the tissue? Is s/he talking about an abdominal cut,

or going through the vagina to remove the fibroid? Do you know how many or what

size fibroids you had/have?

It sometimes is necessary to perform a myomectomy to remove a very large fibroid

following embolization. I would ask for more info on the fibroid, its location

and size, and ask for specific reasons why your GYN feels a myo is necessary.

Either way, while this isn't the common outcome following a UFE, it's not

unheard of either. Please let us know what you find out and how things are

going for you. I'm sure there are women on this Board who have had your

specific situation and can give you more specific information on when a

myomectomy is needed following UFE.

Best of luck, and good health,

Leonie

Thanks Leonie,

My doctor is going to try to do a vaginal myo but doesn't offer

me alot of hope in it because my cervix is tilted pretty severly

and has some strange scar tissue around it. (This has been a long

standing issue all of my life, especially during my pregnancy....I

had a C-section).

He tried a histeroscopy (spell?) prior to UFE as a standard protocol

but it failed because of these difficulties.

So, he is recommending an abdominal cut if a second attempt vaginally

doesn't work, in other words, I would consent to an abdominal myo

even though I am going for a vaginal myo.

I am really uncomfortable with all of this and I haven't decided yet

to do it until I talk to him again with much more specific

questions. I've pursued a second opinion and all I heard was

hysterectomy, so right now he is my only hope in regards to NOT

having a hysterectomy.

I am really disappointed because the UFE seems to have resolved all

of my bleeding issues and I had MAJOR bleeding issues. I feel like

I'm SO close to having it be successful.

Thanks,

Tami

> so tami are you saying that the UAE did no help with your fibroids?

The UAE definitely did help with my fibroids. I was a heavy bleeder

and no longer have that problem. My issue right now is just that my

body is trying to expel a fibroid inside my uterus and it can be

painful especially during my period.

Thanks,

Tami
