Guest guest
Tania, my son jesse who has jra also never gets the flu shot and hardly ever catches the bugs and virus that his 4 brothers get or his friends and classmates get. you may be right about the over active immune system protecting you from the bugs and such but i think it depends on the person. if i remember correctly there are a few girls in the group that tend to get sinus and lung infections. i guess it depends on who it is and what meds they are taking. more food for thought i guess. take care, shelly
Guest guest
Hi Alice. So sorry to hear of your struggles. Perhaps now with a proper diagnosis you will be able to treat the disease better. Just thought I'd mention that Levaquin (levofloxacin) belongs to a group of newer antibiotics called the quinolones. It belongs to the same family as Cipro (ciprofloxacin) which you may have heard before since it's actually been used for a longer period of time. These antibiotics are quite potent and have a bacteriocidal action as opposed to a bacteriostatic one. Bacteriocidal simply means that the AB will actually kill the bacteria instead of merely inhibiting it's growth. Headache, GI disturbances, tremor and rash are all potential side effects. As for my opinion of the flu shot....personally for me I feel it's a waste of time and money. I work in a hospital where they encourage all the employees to receive one. They even pay for it! Anyway, last year my entire department ( I work in pharmacy) except for myself received one of the shots. By the time Spring rolled around everyone had been quite ill at least once except for me. Go figure!! However, I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but since being diagnosed with RA three years ago I've never had so much of a sniffle since. I used to get a wicked cold or the flu at least once over the winter months and now nothing. Could it be that our overworked immune system actually protects us from these bugs now? Maybe, who knows?! Hope you are feeling better Alice...my thoughts are with you. Tania :~)
Guest guest
I have taken MTX for four years now and I get lots of sinus infections, had pleurisy, shingles and any bug that seems to come to me and I have never been taken off the MTX....just given antibiotics and whatever else is needed to get through(antihistamines, zovirax, extra pain meds).I was told it would be best to get flu shot every year...and so I have and I haven't gotten it as bad as everyone else seems to. I also try to stay out of public places and away from sick people , especially as fall goes into winter ..seems to take longer to rid myself of it then. Guest guest
Hi Tania, I have to agree with you that since I was diagnosed with RA, 2 1/1 years ago I have not had one cold. My daughter was just sick with a sore throat and cold, they were worried about me, but nothing. It seems everyone around me gets colds but I no longer do. Could this be the only advantage to RA? Guest guest
That was normally true for me too...........would never get a cold or the flu. However, this past Friday I came down with the sore throat and cold that seems to be going around here........I even gave it to Mom.......I am so generous. ~Esther & Carol~ ''To get out of a difficulty, one usually must go through it.'' Guest guest
Hi a.......yes, I do believe it is just a head cold. Esther had the sore throat only one day followed by the runny nose and I have had the sore throat 3 days so far and even a greater runny nose. Not really sick with it.......it's just a nuisance. Geez, living here in N.J. we have the threat of Lymes Disease and now West Nile Virus. I truly believe that Esther's JRA was misdiagnosed Lymes but the doctors will not confirm that. Has there been any cases of West Nile in your county? So far, none here in Cumberland County. As far as Ron making chicken soup..........I do believe he can open a can of Cambell's Chicken Noodle soup LOL......(.but, our can opener is a little tricky! That is the extent of his cooking, hehehee. However, in his defense, on his days off from work he always serves me coffee in bed. And I must admitt, his coffee always taste so much better than mine Hope things are calming down in your household. How is your son and husband doing? Any surgery date yet? How are you feeling? I feel like I have a little control, just with knowledge about what is happening to me! One thing I have noticed is that since I've had Lupus, my bad allergies have stopped. Used to get teary-eyes and sinus every month during the summer. This is even before I started on prednisone. Hmm, one good thing Alice in Espanola
Guest guest
Carol, I'm glad it is just a cold and not the flu. I hope you both get over it quickly. I had to laugh at your comment on the operation of can openers. It took my husband about a year to figure out how to use ours LOL! We had a horse test positive for west nile not far from us. It is the only reported case in our county so far. Burlington county has had several reports, and it is only less than 10 miles from here. I don't know what is worse, the fear of the virus or the mass spraying of insecticides. 's doctor is still trying the conservative route. He wants him to resume his normal activities for 3 weeks and see what happens. So many times herniated discs heal with no problems. is very discouraged. He thinks this conservative route is now for the birds. He wants surgery so he can go back to living life. This is very hard on him. Hard on me too. We're gimp and limp just trying to hold each other up I am feeling pretty good, thanks for asking. The tetracycline is amazingly keeping down my inflammation. I'm not sure if it's the meds or the change in diet or both that is making me feel so much better. I still have a lot of fibro pain in my muscles and fatigue still gets me, but overall I feel so much better. a BTW, I love your sig lines. ----- Original Message ----- From: Esther & Carol <cheerios@...> < egroups> Sent: Wednesday, October 04, 2000 10:13 AM Subject: Re: [ ] Re: Flu Shots > Hi a.......yes, I do believe it is just a head cold. Guest guest
a, Really glad to hear that the tetracycline seems to be working for you and that you are feeling so much better. Poor . I think men really can't take pain and that is why they don't carry the babies LOL. Seriously, I sure hope the conservative route works for him. I think it is emotionally hard on a man when he can't go to work. Guest guest
Hi Tania, I have noticed this myself, and is something I have always been curious about. I don't get really sick. I have had RA for 18 years, and even before that I rarely got sick. I get a really good cold or bronchitis once a year, but that is about it, IF I get that. This is something that should be research, IMO, that we don't sick with the flu and what not when we have RA. Why?? ~Rainy Sue In a message dated 9/30/00 8:41:34 PM Pacific Daylight Time, tbradley@... writes: > However, I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but since being > diagnosed with RA three years ago I've never had so much of a sniffle since. > I used to get a wicked cold or the flu at least once over the winter months > and now nothing. Guest guest
I belong to Kaiser an HMO and they sent me a postcard asking me to get one.. I was also on Humira and all the other stuff at the time. > > Did anyone get a flu shot? Guest guest
Did anyone get a flu shot? I feel that since I am on Humira and have chronic conditions I should have gotten one but I guess I am not sick enough. My Rheumatologist said, " Get it if you can but don't panic if you don't. I told the nurse that I was on a imune depresser (MTX) that also went after the lungs. I kept talking and I think that she gave it to me to get rid of me. Guest guest
I got my flu shot on Monday, at the rheumy's office. I was there for a routine appt. and asked for the shot. My rheumy. seemed surprised that I was not phoned - I should be on the list, she said. I must have fallen thru the cracks! Inasmuch as I work in a school w/1000 students, who sneeze on me, I really needed that shot! gentle hugs, Marcia --- <catdelouise@...> wrote: > > Did anyone get a flu shot? Guest guest
Hi again, So I found something about this on the Gluten-Free Living blog. The blogger asked the Celiac expert Dr. Alessio Fasano if Celiacs needed to get the H1N1 shot and he said no. You can see the Oct. 1 posting here: http://www.gluten-freeliving.blogspot.com/ > > Hi there, > > I'm planning on getting the seasonal flu shot this year. > > I'm also wondering about the H1N1 shot. I don't seem to be in the category of people who should get the shot, except that people with immune system problems are encouraged to get it. > > I'm pretty healthy and have been gluten free since I was diagnosed with CD nearly 5 years ago. So I don't know if I would qualify as having a compromised immune system. > > So, I'm wondering if anyone has discussed this with their doctor? My first thought is that I'm not a candidate for H1N1, but again I was curious if anyone has explored this topic. > > thanks, > > > p.s. I'm not concerned with all of the controversies surrounding vaccines in general, etc. >
