Should I start again?

Hi all,

I'm new to SCD and aware that the diet specifies an introductory diet

followed by a staged approach to different foods thereafter. I must be

honest and confess that this is not something that I have done since

starting the diet several weeks ago. I eat only those foods permitted,

including raw vegetables and nuts, but I did not stagger their

introduction. I'm pleased to say that far things are going very well -

I am symptom free, feeling very healthy and my stools are all pretty

much normal for the first time in a while.

I am however still on meds that treated my first flare up of CD some

five weeks ago - 20mg of Prednisolone (was 40mg and have been

instructed to reduce by 10mg per week, so at the end of this week I

will at 10mg and so on) as well as 3x2 800mg Asacol tablets.

As I reduce my medication I will become more reliant on the diet and

want to ensure that I am being true to it. Bearing in mind this

context, I would really appreciate any advice/ thoughts all you

experienced SCD'ers may have for a novice like myself as to whether I

should start again and go through the stages properly or continue as I

am?

Many thanks,

Oliver

Olly,

In my opinion I would definitely go back and do the intro diet. Being

on the powerful drugs like the steroids could easily mask the fact

that your guts are not ready to handle everything that you are

currently eating. Key is to start with foods that are really easy to

digest (e.g the mashed banana and carrot) and then as healing begins

to occur you can add more foods. Adding foods carefully and one at a

time means you will be able to see the affects that that particular

food has on your system and either be able to tick it off and add it

to your safe list or make a note to try it again 1/2 months down the

line.

When I started I had just managed to taper off the prednisolone. When

I was on the pred I could pretty much eat anything I liked (both scd

legal and illegal) and not have any symptoms. I think it unlikely

that you are able to get a 'true' reading of what your guts can

handle while you are on the steroids. This is only my personal

experience and opinion - there maybe people who have managed just

fine on pred doing the diet.

Good luck

Mike
