Hi I'm new to this group and was wondering if it is just for trading and

selling stuff. I was hoping to find a group that I can learn about soap

making because I'm just starting out and have lots of questions. If this is

not the right group to belong to for this information, could someone please

let me know if there is such a group.

Thank you .................

Hi

What is CP? I have made only a few batches of soap and know nothing

and one I had to throw out because I used liquids Benzoin instead of powdered

because I couldn't find powdered any place. It was cucumber soap and called

for powedered Benzoin as a fixitive. It turned all brown after a few days

and smelled horrible. do you buy your basic soap or do you make it?

Hi Dianne,

Welcome to the list! I bet you don't have as many questions as I do. I

even have questions about the questions asked <wink at Larrae>. I'm new

to soapmaking too and most of what I've learned has either been from books

or from this list. I'm learning to make CP and it's been a blast. I made

my 4th batch today and so far, it seems to have turned out great! Next

week, my first batch will be cured enough for me to test it. I can't wait!

This is a great list where you can ask just about any question. The people

here are very nice and encouraging and this list is full of people with all

kinds of backgrounds and experience levels. I've learned a lot by just

sitting back and reading everything that people write. I'm also on a few

other lists, but this one is my favorite! Hope you like it as much as I do.

Dianne,

CP stands for Cold Process. It's a way to make basic soap at low temps.

The main 4 ways to make soap are: Cold Process (CP), Hot Process (HP), Melt

& Pour (M & P) and hand-milling (also known as rebatching). If I'm getting

any of this wrong, somebody please jump in and correct me! I'm still

testing basic ingredients so that I can find a basic recipe that I like.

Once I find that, then I'll experiment more with those fancy additives and

fixatives.

From what you've written here, it sounds like you are starting out with the

more difficult way to make soap. One of the first soapmaking books I read,

taught to make soap the way you are describing it. Fortunately, I kept

reading until I understood all of the different ways to make soap and then I

chose the method best for me. Now, one thing you'll see on this list is

that what works for one person may not be what's best for the next, so

please understand that I'm only saying what you're doing sounds more

difficult for me. Some people say M & P is easier than CP. Others people

say it's the other way around. I think it's a personal choice and everyone

is different. If you'd like to learn more about what I'm doing, feel free

to ask. But if you're interested in hand-milled soap, then I'll have to

back off and let someone else jump in on that topic.

Either way, good luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

Hi Dianne! Welcome!

You've come to the right place! Our list is a little slow this weekend - I

think it's due to the holiday. But, we do discuss all aspects of soaping.

If you have a question, feel free to ask. There are no silly questions,

really. =o)

But, this trading stuff does take place on weekends. Each weekend (Friday

thru Sunday) we let our listmembers post things they either want to trade

off or are looking for a specific item.

At any rate, again, welcome! It's a pleasure to have you!

Oh! That makes a lot of sense, Dianne! With all the trading posts and lack

of soaping posts, you must've been wondering what was going on! *L*

Say, btw, do be sure to check out our homepage

(http://www.angelfire.com/mi/Soapmaking101/index.html). It has a lot of

information on it that many find helpful.
