Guest guest
Hildreth-There is some variation in chemotherapy protecols and types of drugs given. I receive oxaliplatin once every two weeks, along with oral Xeloda for 5 days. The infusion of oxaliplatin takes 2 hrs. I also lobbied to receive an infusion of calcium/magnesium for 1 hr before and 1 hr after, which some reports have shown to lessen long term side effects. As for who to go to, it may be worth visiting a larger cancer center to get their suggestions since this change in the status of your disease, even if you recieve treatments from an oncologist at a smaller practice closer to home. Larger centers, which often preform clinical trials are often have more experience with newer treatments, and often work with local oncologists to optimize treatment. Here is hoping that things go well, Kris

Guest guest
Get a 2nd opinion from a major center just to be sure. I don't remember all of your mom's situation to be able to respond with assurance but that would seem to be the logical thing to try. I hope they are able to do more for her. Guest guest
Sharon, Yes that doesn't seem right, I think getting a second opinion is the next step right now. We have also two new drugs our right now, erbitux and avastin. Apparently for some patients they really work well. I think Erbitux can also be given by itself without chemo in some cases. I hope you can find another doctor soon. I don't know all the medical issues that your mother faces right now, but since she hasn't had any other treatment apart from 5fu I would imagine she has a lot of options. Good luck, and let us know what you find out! (husband stage IV diagnosed January 2003, 33 years old)
Guest guest
Sharon, There are other things they can do but I don't know if your Mom qualifies. has had 3 RFA's to the lungs in the past. Due to the fact that he has been put on a respirator after the last 3 surgeries he can not be put to sleep anymore. The procedure that he had last October and that he is currently doing right now is IMRT. The can also do SR, both of these are a type of radiation that can zone in on several tumors at one time delivering each it's own dose of radiation. Our Radiologist was kind enough to email me the literature and I had post it to our site. It takes a while to download but it is worth doing so. The IMRT or SR is delivered in 3 sessions. Each session takes about 2hours. The radiaiton only takes 5 minutes but they have to do a CT and make sure you are possitioned properly. He has had no side effects other than fatigue. He has also started taking Xeloda and Avastin. He just finished his 3rd round this week and the Oncologist wants to see him in July to see how well it working. If you want to take a look go over to the left side of this page and click on Files and scan down to SBRT handout posted by Antivon on April 13, 2004. IMRT can be used on lungs, liver, brain and various other organs. So far it has been more successful than the RFA. During all these procedure's has lived a good life, once he had the colostomy last November, and you would never know he has cancer. He has built a air boat from scratch, and I mean from scratch. He literally welded a boat together and got a engine from a junkyard and reassembled it. I know this has nothing to do with cancer but it was a physical and mental challenge. He did it to keep his mind off of his problems. He has now started boat #2 which he tells me is for our Son, Right????? You are doing the right thing by questioning the Doctors and our message board. Do NOT ever stop hunting for new procedures and asking your Mom's doctors if it can be done. It has kept alive for 4 years and they only thought they could buy him one. Best Wishes Joyce > Friends, > > Mom saw the oncologist yesterday, and he was pleased that she is > seeing the radiological surgeon in re: an RFA. Guest guest
Narice, That is a good suggestion. If she can have the RFA, it will be at the University of Virginia. It does have a cancer center, but I don't know how renowned it is. Duke would be the closest alternative. Sharon > Get a 2nd opinion from a major center just to be sure. Guest guest
Joyce, I don't know if UVA does either of these procedures. Would I insult the surgeon if I asked about about them when Mom goes for the consultation? Where is having the IMRT? It is good to hear about his boat building; I am trying to help my mother get quality time as well. Having something else to think about has to help your husband. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, gets his IMRT at Cancer Therapy and Research in San , Tx. We just saw in our local newspaper they are going to double the size again and supposidly going to be one of the #1 cancer centers in the US. I do a lot of research and found the IMRT and the SR radiation. I then approached the Oncologist and he said it could be done right in the same building in the Radiology Department. He actually called the Radiologist and we went right down to discuss with him. I would not think the surgeon would be as up to date on the Radiology procedures as your Oncologist would be. The one thing I have learned about surgeons is that they know what they do best and then your off to your original physician. If I were in your shoes I would ask your Mom's Oncologist about the procedures and if he thinks she would be a candidate. Sharon, you might want to go to google and type in IMRT or SR radiation and read up some more so you can act like you know all about this procedure. 's Onc always looks down at my hands to see what I am bringing in next. Deep in my heart I feel like they probably would not have offered the treatments to if I had not come in armed and ready. Guest guest
Here is my slant on the deal. Your there to treat. If you are in danger, retreat. Notify law enforcement. If someone really wants to get at you, you really will not have enough warning to spray. Otherwise you have enough warning to retreat. If the issue of being attacked or hurt continues to bother you, you might want to look for other work. There is always the possibility that this may occur. You can't dwell on it. If folks start arming themselves with the spray, what will they want to carry next? The best defense you can have is always stay alert, pay attention to your surroundings and read the scene. I have been doing this for over 30 sumpin years and it has worked for me. Henry
