Guest guest
Hi folks, This is my first post and I am brand new to SCD. I would appreciate some advice on how and when to start the diet based on my history and a recent surgery. I was diagnosed with Crohn's about 12 years ago when I was 20. Things were ok for the first 9 years or so, I was only on Asacol and pretty much ate and drank whatever I wanted. The last 3 have been the most difficult. 2 years ago I was hospitalized to have 2 abcesses drained that formed from fistulas near my terminal illieum. After several months on Prednisone I was able to stabilize on Azathioprine. The last few months I've had recurrent infections and some partial blockage. 2 weeks ago I had resection surgery. They removed about 8 inches of small and large intestine around the terminal illieum. My recovery has gone very well so far. I would like to try SCD to see if it works for me. My doctor is continuing me on a heavy dose of Azathioprine and its something I'd rather not be on for the rest of my life. I'd also like this surgery to be my last. My issue is that Im not sure if its to soon to start. I still have alot of healing to do and about 20 lbs I'd like to regain. I also don't really know what is " normal " for me now. I no longer have the part of my intestine that was the source of most of my troubles. From what we can tell so far, the rest of my intestine looks to be in pretty good shape right now. So it will be difficult to know if its the diet or the surgery that are helping with my upcoming recovery (thinking positively) Thanks for your help. Guest guest
Oren, Welcome to the list -- we're glad you found us, though, of course, sorry you needed to! (Perfect health for us all... ah, now there's a Holiday Dream worth dreaming!) First of all, having had major surgery for endometrial cancer in April, I can tell you that SCD is one of the best diets in the world to be on for healing from surgery! I was told I would likely have infection -- I had none. I was told I would almost certainly have wound opening -- I had none. I recovered faster than either of my surgeons expected. And so forth and so on. (My oncologist was absolutely super about helping me stay SCD legal, even in the hospital.) The surgery has removed the damages -- but unless you correct the bacterial imbalances that led to your illness in the first place, it may not stay that way. So you've chosen an excellent time to get going on this -- clean slate, change the diet, and keep the illness from coming back! Again, welcome -- we have a wonderful and knowledgeable collection of people on this list. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
