Thanks for the response - just curious - how can you tell that this is a response to the illegals and not a die of? It's my first experience with this as I did not have a die off at three months and I'd like to have a better sense myself. Well you prefaced by saying you had likely had illegals. What you described sounds like the beginning of a flare in reaction to illegals. It starts with diarrhea and blood can come later. And can last a while. Ittakes a few days to develop fully. Die-off is the reaction to bacteria and yeast exploding internally and releasing their toxins intoyour system. You can have D or C with die-off, but IME, you feel ill - like with a virus or a cold, with a fever, etc. I suppose it could trigger bleeding, but I don't believe that istypical, or that it would bring that on all by itself since in fact it signifies a reduction inbacteria levels. initiated 17.5 mg of Prednisone yesterday as things started getting bad quickly. Yesterday was 12 visits to the bathroom and blood while the day before was 7 visits. I have never had the symptoms come on so strongly so quickly - usually takes a month or two. What was the illegal you think you ingested? To answer your question I have UC and have for close to six years now. It actually was only Ulcerative Proctitis for 1/2 that time then it started "crawling up" my intestines. End of Dec I will have been on SCD for five months. Last flare was in July, a really bad one and I took Prednisone for a little over two months. Today only three visits to the loo and itis 10am. Yesterday I was already at five by this time (although I did have something to eat and I have not yet today)Any idea why homemade pedialite might cause a headache?what's in it? Thank you for the feedback - I am very proactive and will remain true to the diet as planned. In as much thought any candle of light for guidance in all of this darkness of uncertainty is soooooo appreciated. When you are finished with the prednisone - you might want to consider trying LDN. Just a thought. It boost the immune system. MaraSCD 18 months

Regarding illegals and what I had ingested - on Firday I order Salmon, ok with butter and the butter had brown sugar in it - I did not realize till I ate half. On Saturday, I went out to this Chinese place and asked for stir fry - I would not normally go to a Chinese place but my parents insisted that they new the owner and they could help me. The first stir fry prep had corn starch as a thickener - I had a little taste on my finder and sent it back. The server with pursed lips insisted the second round should only have oil and or butter - it still seemed a little suspicious. That day I also had a reaction to Monterray Jack Cheese - had a big hunk of it, producing D but it went away. Monday I went out again for a holiday dinner. Already having a cramped stomach on and off, I had rib eye veggies and steamed mushrooms - that night was foul gas and D. Tuesday seemed to be formed stool but loose and Wed it went to D and some blood and I have not been right since. So it was a flare brought on by sugar, cornstarch and whatever else, if anything, was in the third holiday dinner. By this point, your system is more sensitive and not yet healed, so even minimal amounts of illegalscan trigger a big reaction. I also had a misstep at a holiday luncheon on Wednesday - very minimalamounts of food but it triggered a reaction taking a few days to clear. I stupidly tasted someone'sbutternut squash soup - which had sugar in it. Eep. I've made that soup for years (pre-SCD as well)and never used sugar - didn't occur to me to think about it. Also had like a teaspoon or two of parmesan in my salad - I've been going dairy free lately, but I had a moment of *weakness* - heh -and didn't ask the waiter for that to be removed from the salad. And so I had a reaction to one or both. Mara, thanks for your feedback. it is most helpful on gaining insight here but I had a few questions: You wrote "Die-off is the reaction to bacteria and yeast exploding internally and releasing their toxins into your system. You can have D or C with die-off, but IME, you feel ill - like with a virus or a cold, with a fever, etc. I suppose it could trigger bleeding, but I don't believe that is typical, or that it would bring that on all by itself since in fact it signifies a reduction in bacteria levels."I know what "D" is but I do not know what "C" or "IME" means - please clarify.C=constipationIME- in my experienceI usually find that die-off slows down my BM cycle - feels like a bit of C, rather than giving meD. But all reactions are individual. So you may experience something different. Mara

Mara, LDN? I know of an immune suppressor but what is LDN and where can I get it. I have an appt with my primary care physician tomorrow (Monday), assuming that I can get out of the house - we have snow and freezing rain here in Portland, OR :( - I was initially going to see here regarding some hair loss issue s that I have had in the last month, but she is a celiac specialist and knows that I am on this diet.Does anyone know of any SCD gastointerologists in the Portland area?LDN = low dose naltrexone.I've been on for slightly longer than a month - and it's not a cure all, but seemsto be helping me. It helps your system produce more endorphins - somethingimmuno-compromised people apparently have a hard time doing - so it's likegiving a kick start to your immune system, instead of suppressing it, the waythat drugs like prednisone and MP6 do to minimize symptoms. The theory is that if your immune system is given a boost by the extra endorphinproduction, it will do what it is supposed to do - target the bad guys and helpheal the body. So, like SCD, it's a healing process, not an overnightdifference - the way remicade or prednisone can be. The interesting thing is that it works complementarily to SCD, because the knowledgable docs who advise it for UC/CD, etc., want you to beon a no sugar, gluten, soy, etc, diet. Because otherwise it can trigger ayeast infection (not clear on the mechanism of this yet - maybe just byaccomplishing its own die-off, which then causes yeast to multiply tofill the void, as it were - I keep meaning to ask but haven't done so yet.)And then the yeast infection, one way or another, interferes with theprogress of the LDN. So, as it turns out, SCD is the best diet to beon with LDN. Which is very serendipitous, as far as I'm concerned. Plus, it boosts endorphins - that's the mechanism that occurs duringrunner's high, for example, or while consuming dark chocolate, soyou end up feeling pretty damn good. <g> But you can't take it at the same time as prednisone or MP6 - sincethose drugs cancel each other out. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/lowdosenaltrexone/?yguid=19643Mara
