Guest guest
I've used Parmalat's Pomi Chopped or Strained Tomatoes. I don't have aletter directly from the company stating they are SCD friendly, as they're HQ'd in Italy, but everything I've researched so far seems to indicate that they only use tomatoes (except in the marinara sauce). Here are the Product Details:Packaged in Italy where growing conditions are perfect for tomatoes,Pomi tomato products are made with only the best part of the tomato:no seeds, no skin, and no core. Pomi is delicious on pastas, meats andall your favorite Italian dishes. From fresh tomatoes. All natural. No fat. No sodium added. Noartificial flavor. No preservatives. No water added. No citric acid.No refrigeration needed. Product of Italy.Ingredients: Tomatoes. Anyone else use Pomi? BTW, I find it at Whole Foods.Vicki
Guest guest
At 04:10 PM 12/15/2008, you wrote: are there ANY tomato sauces/ pastes or canned diced tomatoes out there that are not illegal?? I am a working mother of 3 and it would be SO much more convenient if I could use one. It seems like the sauces say " natural flavorings " what IS that anyhow!!! " Natural flavorings " can be darn near anything, including sugar, so anything with natural flavorings is not SCD legal. You can cook tomato juice down to make thick sauces. After you get into the swing of things, it's almost as fast to chop a couple of tomatoes as to add canned ones. Some people say Muir Glen organics are OK; I have reacted to them. Some people say there are other brands out there which may be legal. I choose not to risk it after my experience with the Muir Glen. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Addendum: Not just any Muir Glen, only the *whole tomato* with nothing added Muir Glen. Kendal Conrad who wrote Eat Well, Feel Well, also says that Italian whole tomatoes from Italy (not the ones packaged here) are legal, because labeling is far stricter there and sugar cannot be added without it specifically stating so. OTOH, they also recently had a scandal in Italy in which it was revealed that some *Italian* tomatoes with proper Italian labels originated in China, where they definitely do add sugar and God knows what else, all against Italian law. So if you are buying Italian, choose the most reputable brands, keep this in mind and use it at your own risk, as it were. As Marilyn said, the safest thing is to make your own. Yes, I use them with no problem, several other brands here in Italy too, probably also made by Parmalat under different names. I get it from one of the SCD food sites - can't remember which one and I adore it for spaghetti. I order by the case so I always have some on hand.
