Guest guest
My son is going to try S. Boulardii but we're confused about when he should take it. Kirkman Labs says 'between meals on an empty stomach'. GI ProHealth says 'with beverages or meals'. Which way is correct and which way have people found is best for them? Thanks for your help, and thanks Kim. M for the advice on antibiotics - I've copied your response to my son. Guest guest
Hi Lesley, From what I have learned with the help of GAPS is that it is best to take a probiotic when stomach acid is at it's lowest so the acid won't kill the bacteria. That is after a meal. I also like it that Elaine didn't specify how to do all of this. Meaning I think she kept it open with enough wiggle room for all of us to learn what is best suited for our individual needs. I think she was absolutely brilliant that she gave us this blue print- it's frustrating though with much trial and error. I have a dickens of a time introducing and using probiotics. After the 9 month flare- I cannot take acidophilous or eat yogurt at all. It was getting difficult for me before the flare- but I had to start all over again. The probiotics cause such extreme die off for me that I experience intense intestinal spasming reminiscent of a bowel obstruction. It is so painful and I basically hallucinate and whimper on the couch. To make myself so sick is terrifying let alone who in heavens name will do this kind of cooking, prep and shopping for me? I am finally able to take 1 capsule of S Boulardii at night about 45 minutes after dinner. Thanks to Baden's wonderful advice I was able to work up to it with much less difficulty than previous attempts. Start at a fraction of a capsule (I did 1/8th) and see how it works. If it doesn't cause too much problems, skip the next day and the day after take it again. If that is ok up the dosage the next day etc and continue slowly.
