Bob: Yes, there is a window of opportunity with the DS as with any WLS. At least that is what I'm told. The thing that immediately comes to my mind is " what if I don't lose it fast enough and haven't gotten there in the 18 month to 2 year window? " I'm told that the answer is that those who are super-morbidly obese will simply lose faster than the morbidly obese. And my guess is that it is a chicken or the egg sort of thing. The reason that most lose their weight in 18 months is that by then they are at a balance point. If it takes them 2-1/2 years to get there I expect that would work fine. But the nature of the surgery is that almost regardless of how much we have to lose, it usually gets done in the 18 month to 2 year window. Regards.
