One thing that might help is the Carlson vitamin E suppositories as well as taking more vitamin E by mouth Read these two posts. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD/message/12374 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD/message/13901 I think this could be useful for everyone with UC. And here's the cheapest place to get the suppositories that I found. http://www.vitacost.com/Carlson-Key-E-Suppositories-with-Natural-Vitamin-E I recently started this myself - less than a week - and I'm finding it helpful - wish I had known about this earlier as I think it might have been even more useful at the beginning and when going through longish flares, etc. If nothing else, it would be very soothing for your daughter who is experiencing D and bleeding. Often there is some rectal discomfort or itchiness/achiness that goes along with that - and this works great for that internally. Plus, it might help with some internal healing. On the level of food, I'm wondering if she is sensitive to dairy perhaps. That might cause gas pains and even bleeding. I'd try a few days of no dairy and add coconut oil, olive oil and avocado and zucchini in as soon as you can. And clarified butter (ghee - google for a recipe). Maybe serve the soup with a soft boiled yolk - or soft boiled egg to give it more richness and fat content. Tastes really good that way. >One thing > she did have for a couple of days was the spaghetti squash which I > think might have been too early to try. Am I doing something wrong?? It's not wrong, rather you may need to adjust the diet specifically to your daughter - which takes time and is a difficult process. And you can only do it by testing things and doing eliminations. Unfortunately. Wishing Kayla and you the best. Mara
Guest guest
Therese The SCD foods that Kayla is eating may still be causing some issues with her intestinal walls, so you may want to do some further " testing. " I don't have bleeding issues, not having an IBD but rather functional upper GI disorders, yet I can't eat half of the foods you list that Kayla is currently eating simply because my upper GI reacts badly. While Kayla's upper GI isn't reacting, one or more of the foods might just be too difficult for her to digest, which aggravates her intestinal walls causing further bleeding. The testing part of the process can be frustrating. I find it helps to just be methodical. Eliminate one item at a time, for a week or more, and see if my symptoms improve. If nothing changes then I eliminate another one, and so on. Or doing the reverse can also help depending on the symptoms, going back to clear liquids and slowly adding one food at a time. The clear liquid route is easier when you have upper GI symptoms than intestinal bleeding, and Kayla might not be as agreeable to be on clear liquids for a few days. You might go back to the intro. diet for a few days, then add one " new " food at a time, but also remember that some of the Elaine's suggested intro. foods aren't tolerated by everyone. I can't eat half of the intro. foods either, so had to substitute foods that are easy for my body to handle. The point of the intro. diet is to stick to soft, easy-to-digest foods for a few days, giving your digestion an easier time. My impression from what you've written is that Kayla's digestion is still not tolerating much, so you may find it helpful to figure out which foods are the best tolerated, and stick with them for several months at least, giving her body time to heal. Guest guest
Maybe it's the cheddar cheese? My daughter has crohn's and can't eat cheddar for some reason. ~kathy
