Guest guest
My 7 year old with Crohn's has been SCD for the last 3 months. We have had what I guess would be success. His BM's changed from D to mushy, formed. It has been this way for the whole 3 months, occasionally, a formed poop, but that's about it. Christmas time was very difficult for me to adhere to the diet and plan for company, etc. As a family, we made a decision to come off the diet for the week of Christmas, and begin again yesterday. Since coming off the diet, my son has has consistently formed poops - every day- and just one a day, as oppossed to the 2 mushy ones on the diet. How can this be?? I find myself questioning what I'm doing. He is on Colazal, and has been since the begining. Nothing has changed, other than the illegal foods. I just question why I'm going through all the effort of the diet, and see better results off???? Has any one else experienced this?? Thanks Kim
Guest guest
I have. And it is frustrating to say the least. I sometimes think that the diet does work - but many times I also doubt it as well. I've been on for 3 months. Previously I was on it for maybe 8 mts to a year. I went into remission and began eating whatever foods I liked. I ate whatever I liked for about 2 years. I wasn't having any trouble, except C which has always been an issue, until about 8 months ago when I began to notice I was having trouble again. So the disease came out of remission. I have been on the diet 4 months or so now and saw some improvement at the beginning, but now things have gotten worse. I've decided to cut out o.j., honey, yogert and cheese for a week and see if symptoms improve. I should also say that when I was on the diet the 1st time, I really was not following the book that much. No yogurt, lots of pre-shredded cheeses with starches, sweet potatoes, soy milk. I don't remember what happened except that I only read the book once and thought I was following it! So did the disease come out of remission because of the foods I ate or is it just its natural cycle? (Ulcerative Colitis/IBS by the way) I do not believe my disease is totally reliant on being healed by SCD foods. I know, scandalous! Just my .02 cents worth. Guest guest
I did exactly what you did. I started the diet then when I saw so much improvement, I started eating regular food but I kept the yogurt going. It was so much harder to restart, it took longer to show improvement and easier to cheat for some reason. After going through some iron issues, I ate illegals again. Now I'm back to being convinced if I stay strict--and it will take longer than if I had stayed on it to begin with--a lot longer, and stay on the iron until everything shows up normal--I may have to keep this diet from now on. I do think it controls symptoms so well, eventually the blood work will be normal to good. Or great. So here we go again. I think it just takes longer depending on how long or how damaged and how strict you stay. It totally solved the main problems the first time I started it by being able to maintain food--at least for me. You just have to take it slow, maybe reduce some of the baked goods for longer than some people. Avoid one food you tolerate and eating it all the time like peanut butter or in my case, the DCCC. How can this be?? I find myself questioning what I'm doing. < If he was a baby and starting on solids you would expect a few mushy poops a day. One hard poop once a day would be a sign of constipation. Obviously he is not a baby, but IF the problem is his gut flora, he is starting like a baby to build up a good gut flora and doing that by eating like a baby, encouraging the " good " bacteria to mulitply. The thing is, poop is not food leftovers. Poop is mostly made of the bi-products of the bacteria in your gut. And water. So he has gone from lots of runny, maybe foamy, stuff to mushy formed stools That is a great sign! Things are happening in there. Just keep going. Don't be fooled by hard poop LOL Plus a child should poop a couple of times a day. That is a good sign things are moving along inside Cecilia
Guest guest
I have heard from experts that once you go to remisision, you need to stick to SCD for the rest of the life, not to become sick again. I guess you ate the SCD illegal food after going to remisison, that is perhaps the reason. I am still suffeirng a lot and not even gone to remission, I pray so hard and tell myself, only If I could go to remisison once, I woudl strictly stick to SCD and I would sacrifice so much, so much in my life till the end, even then, I am not gone to remisison, I have sacrificed so much already........... Guest guest
My question is Does SCD work only for Crohn disease or also for All types of colitis including UC? I read many with CD gone into remisisoon successfully with SCD alone, In case of UC, do we need to do something extra apart from strictly following the SCD ? Thank you Sandhya Subject: Re: Re: looking for answerTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Monday, December 29, 2008, 10:20 AM I did exactly what you did. Guest guest
Marilyn, Thank you for your line "SCD works, I would not be alive today, if it didnt." It gives me hope, even though I am so depressed that it is not working so well with me right now. Sandhya I do not believe my disease is totally reliant on being healed by SCD foods.
