Dental visits = antiobiotics for me

Hi all,

I'm in a real pickle concerning my teeth. I have a pacemaker, so the

doctor is telling me I'm not allowed to get my teeth cleaned without

having an antibiotic first. I avoided this for eight years, because I

didn't want to take the antibiotic (I REALLY get hammered with

intestinal problems if I take them). Well, last June, I bit the bullet

and took the antibiotics (they gave me a shot so I didn't have all the

illegals to deal with), and I've struggled terribly with yeast problems

since then. I eat a little over two cups of yogurt a day too. I

probably need some sort of antifungal, but all of those just give me D,

so I hate to do that.

Anyway...my questions is this. Is there ANY other way to keep your

teeth healthy and clean other than professional cleanings? Is it just a

matter of brushing lots, flossing lots, and using whitening gels? What

can I do to keep them clean without going to the dentist? Are there

natural ways to do this?

I can get regular fillings, and other dental work without an

antibiotic. But apparently, since the cleanings expose me to all sorts

of bacteria, there's a risk of that bacteria sticking to the leads in

the pacemaker and settling in my heart. Not really a risk I want to

take!

Sorry so long. Thanks for any help you can give.

I have had major dental issues, and constantly work hard to keep my

gums and teeth healthy. I don't have a pacemaker, however, so

haven't had to deal with that aspect. Can't advise you on that. But

my experience has been that I can't keep my teeth and gums healthy

unless I get them cleaned every 3 months, even when I'm doing lots of

work at home, brushing and flossing.

But I found that my dental health suddenly improved somewhere between

year 3 and year 4 on SCD. I'd gotten my candida overgrowth under

control, and had really improved my gut ecology. I still do my usual

maintenance at home, and continued to get my teeth cleaned every 3

months as I'd been doing for 10 years or more, since developing

peridontal disease. But I stopped developing abcesses and cracking

teeth, and haven't needed a root canal or new filling in two years --

which is a record for me.

So maybe you'll find that the longer on SCD you are, the better

you'll tolerate the antibiotics (recover more quickly, less candida)

and the better your teeth and gums will be.

Hi ,

In May of 2007, the American Heart Association revised the guidelines for SBE prophylaxis (Subacute Bacterial Endocarditis, also written as IE, Infective Endocarditis). Many of my patients, who for many years had routinely been 'prophylaxed', no longer have to take antibiotics before a dental visit. However, in the 20 years of being a dentist, I have never heard of a pacemaker patient who had to take them. Below is the link for the AHA and ADA guidelines for patients at risk for IE.

http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/116/15/1736/TBL3183095

Now, if you have any of these other conditions, then you need to take antibiotics. If you don't, then you need to have a BIG discussion with both your doctor and dentist. If the only reason you are taking the antibiotic is because of a pacemaker, then it's time to get a new doctor and a new dentist. Of even greater concern is the fact that you have delayed having your teeth cleaned for 8 years and you have a cardiac condition. There is an ever growing body of evidence linking inflammation of the gums and gum disease to cardiac disease. The bugs from your gums travel to your arteries, lodging there in the atherosclerotic plaques and cause inflammation and more damage.

As to your question about keeping your teeth clean and 'ANY other way'; flossing DAILY and brushing are excellent ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Unfortunately, when tartar accumulates, the only way to remove it is by a professional. Tartar is calcified dental plaque that is teeming with millions of bugs on its surface, causing inflammation and mayhem. If you have gum disease, you need to have your teeth cleaned every 3 months. No gum disease, every 6 months.

If I can be of further help, please let me know.
