An extremely, extremely good article on the role of 12-stepping in

American Judaism is Heinze, 1999, 'The Americanization of

Mussar: Abraham Twerski's Twelve Steps, " in Judaism: A Quarterly

Journal of Jewish Life and Thought, Fall Issue.

This article should be read by anyone with an interest in 12-

Stepping in America, Jewish or not. Heinze is Associate Professor of

History, and Director of the Swig Judaic Studies Program at the

University of San Francisco. In 1990, he published Adapting to

Abundance: Jewish Immigrants, Mass Consumption, and the Search for

American Identity.

Abraham Twerski is a psychiatrist, and son of a Hasidic rabbi. He

is the most published and influential, and also most intellecually

impressive, of those Jewish thinkers who are now re-interpreting

Jewish tradition using 12-Step tools. Not only has his work had a

very large resonance in the Jewish community, it has crossed over

into the mainstream 'recovery' market. E.g., some of his work has

been published and promoted by Hazelden.

The article is available in full from Looksmart's

Findarticle's.com. If you put 'Judaism' and '12-Step' into the

search engine there, it should come up on the first page. It is

really worth everyone's time to print out and read this particular

piece, I think. It is the best and most interesting thing I have

found.
