Guest guest
My teenage son has had a series of iron IVs and it went very well. Our doctor explained that he uses a much safer version than the Dextran, which can cause severe reactions. From what he told us, Dextran is the older version, but newer, safer (more expensive) versions are available. So I would definitely ask what type of iron solution would be used. Our doctor used Sodium ferric gluconate, and as I said, the process went very smoothly and the results were good, though not immediate. My son's ferratin level was '3' when he started, which the doctor said was the lowest he'd ever seen, and later told us was a level barely able to sustain cell function (which sure doesn't sound good to me). We did a series of 8 IVs, one/week. Ferratin got up to 39, which is the low end of the normal range. Definitely a big help.
