Because the yeast used to make the wine converts the sugar in the grape

juice to alcohol. Similar to making yogurt from milk. Sweet wines have

the problem that they are often sweetened with concentrated added grape

juice, or sugar, or Diety Forbid, high fructose corn syrup.
