Guest guest
Has anyone had exprerience taking Iron interveneously? My doctor suggested either Procrit or IV iron. I read up on Procrit and I was scared of it's side effects. Does the IV iron have the same side effects? Thanks.
Guest guest
I had IV iron a few years ago and it was awesome! I felt 10 years old again, so much energy. I was to have it for 7 days. The second day I felt great but I noticed my eyes were blurry for a couple of hours after. The third day I told the nurse who put in the IV but she just shrugged. After about 30 minutes of the IV an old man sitting across from me asked "Signora, are you ok?" I felt fine, very tired though and he told me to call the doctor. I must have looked pretty bad to him. I rang for the doctor and the man told her to check me. She checked my blood pressure, started yelling at the nurse to get the IV out and put in another drip and then yelled at me for not telling her I had low blood pressure. Apparently I was going into shock. I still wanted that iron but she told me to never come back again. I asked my doc for iron shots and he said it would have the same reaction and I was never to have iron injected or IV again. I was really upset because I felt so wonderful. I had been anemic for over 30 years but after only 6 weeks on SCD my iron is normal and no more need for iron. Even though my experience was bad, I would suggest it with careful monitoring. Guest guest
I have gotten Venofer IV infusions for anemia. When my iron gets too low, I get 1 infusion a week for 4 weeks. Each infusion takes about 2 hours. I have no problems during the infusion, but by the evening of infusion number 1, I end up feeling terrible (achey, vomiting, etc.). However, I never have a problem with infusions 2 - 4. Usually, they only helped minimally. They restored my hemoglobin levels, but not my ferritin. Last time though, my ferritin levels shot up to the highest they've ever been! It was the first set of infusions I've had since being on Humira, so I'm guessing that might have something to do with it. My doctor says Venofer is usually well-tolerated, so it's something for you to look into. Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > Has anyone had exprerience taking Iron interveneously?
