> Mine are all rescues too, but the Bichon is the only actual puppy mill dog. I had two Dobes who died about 6 years ago, right after I got into Chihuahua rescue. I've always wanted another one, but not with these little guys around while I'm doing rescue.

I live in the country, off the beaten path. You have to know the house is here, then turn and come down a 1000 ft. dirt road to get to the house. The only way you would know it is here at night is because of the security light. My husband is sometimes gone for weeks at a time due to work. I've had men and teenage boys show up at my gate as late as 11:00 p.m. supposedly looking for someone or something. I never felt safe the whole two years after my Dobie died, even with all these other dogs and a gun here. Now with the Pyrenees, I don't have to worry. The fencing surrounds the house, so there's no way anyone could get in this house. When someone comes around, even in the daytime, she always places herself between me and them and doesn't move. She can tell when I'm flaring. At night she usually wanders around the house. But when I'm flaring, she comes in about every 15 minutes and sniffs me and goes back out to guard. Dogs are truly amazing.

9 dogs?! Wow...they must keep you REALLY busy! We have 3 ferrets, a 7 year old golden retriever and a 1 year old beagle. We have recently thought of getting another beagle pup. Will see how it goes.

I just had to speak up. I usually just read the messages but thought

it was sort of funny that so many of us have dogs. I have 7 myself. 5

that are mine and 2 fosters. I do lab rescue. My dogs definately keep

me going on my bad days! Take care everyone. I love reading the

messages and dont say much but really appreciate everyone on here!

My Boston Terrier steals the seat you are

sitting in by lying about having to go out. As soon as your butt is out,

her butt is in it. Then she grins, so proud of herself. Since she

is a person and not a dog, she sleeps with me and is the best hot water bottle

under the covers. When my wrist hurts, I put it up on her and warm it

nicely. She is also in charge of cleaning my ears and is on permanent toe

jam duty.

That's why I got all my outside critters. Gives me a reason to get up and move around every day.

I’m

looking for a dog right now, but I need one who

could ‘work’

as a service animal and protector as well.

Does

anybody have any ideas where I can find a young

dog or

puppy? I’m moving to a valley with no closed gate,

he’ll

go with me on my job (there’s a lot of driving involved)

and I need

someone who would be happy being calm around me

as I rarely

can handle a jumpy dog or one who prefers standing

up to ‘hug’

me.

Thanks

Love and

peace to you all

Shelters are filled with dogs -- as far as working as a service animal and protector, you will have to bond with the dog and train it. If he is with you all the time, the protection comes naturally.

Remember that if you are going to use a dog as a "service animal" in public, you must meet the ADA guidelines as disabled. Otherwise you cannot use the dog in public. In some states, the dog must be trained by an authorized organization. Some states, such as TX, have ambiguous laws which say they have to be trained by such an organization (you cannot owner train), yet they have no list of such organizations. A service dog would not be good as a guardian dog, though should bond enough to be some protection for you.

Well I’ve

had dogs before and I know their character in breed plays a large role

in their

personality.

Once has

a Siberian husky-- lovely, precious friend, but terrible protector. She either

hid from

strangers or welcomed them heartily! LOL My german shepherd was a great

protector,

but entirely too energetic. I couldn’t handle that now.

All the

shelters around me are full of dogs bred for fighting or little dogs, neither

of

which fits

the bill.

It’s

really important to find the perfect dog for your situation and your family,

that’s why

I am

hoping that there is a word-of-mouth puppy out there somewhere waiting on me.

I take this

pretty seriously. Maybe too seriously.

Love and

peace to you
