Where in FL are you? The panhandle is only an hour and a half drive from here in Mississippi ... and Dr Booth is right here in town ..Ocean Springs (next town east of Biloxi).

I am switching to United Health Care (UHC) PPO effective 1/1/2001. There is

no exclusion in my (soon to be policy) to exclude WLS and when I called UHC,

they confirmed that the procedure code for DS is a covered procedure if found

to be medically necessary.

I live in Illinois and there are no DS doc's here either. I am going to Dr.

Dennis in Georgia (he does lap). Even though he is out of state, he is

a UHC provider and since I have the PPO, it will be covered as long as it is

deemed necessary. With a BMI of 48, I certainly hope they will find it

necessary! They have promised to review my case " on 1/1/2001. " I wrote back

to them and told them they should enjoy the holiday and wait until 1/2! :)

You can go to UHC's web site and look up particular doctors on their web site

to see if they are a contracted provider. Here is the URL for their provider

directory:

http://www.provider.uhc.com/

As I said, I have the PPO. If you have an HMO, this may not apply.

Best of luck!

Soozy:

Again, it depends on the policy. For surgery my policy doesn't have

in and out of network. Get the DS surgeon of your choice to write

them asking for pre-approval. If he comes up with a real good set of

reasons - co-morbidities - you will probably get approved. Don't ask

about the RNY, ask about the DS. Your surgeon should explain to them

why you need *that* surgery.
