Paige, welcome,

It's wonderful that you are discovering this process in your 20's. Yes, dieting

does not work. I have dieted myself almost to 300 pounds. I am slowly releasing

the weight.

Hi, Paige. You're going to love it here, more so, you're going to love IE. I read an interesting quote in a book on managing your life today, it said that there is one thing about living and making changes -- it takes TIME. Give yourself time. Figure out the IE way ... you'll be happy you did. The first thing I did, and it took me TIME to get the concept, was know when I'm hungry and know when I'm full. Then I had to let go of the diet mentality -- and stop banning certain foods from my thinking. you'll get there. Tai

Welcome! Glad you found IE at such a young age. I am 67 and am having to change 60 plus years of diet mentality. We all seem to get help from each other. That's what is so graet about this site. And if anything doesn't "fit" for you, you can just acknowledge that and discard it. Keep posting about your own journey. Sandy

I've decided sweets ain't that great. Other than Reese's peanut butter cups, I can't think of any chocolate candy sweet I'd like to indulge in. Now chocolate cake with icing is definitely in the "fun food" category at this point! We went to a friend's house the other night and she had chocolate cake. Boy was that good! And I had two pieces of that as well as some cheesecake. since then which was last Friday I haven't had any cake. But if I wanted to badly enough, I would have it. In fact, I'm convincing myself to get coffee cake for breakfast! :-) TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2011 8:12 PMSubject: Re: Re: Intro

Hi, Paige. As you continue listening to your body signals, you'll know what to do. It took me time and I'm still learning. I remember some time ago listening to a tape about IE, and the speaker mentioned that most fat people never experience hunger. I agreed. I was always eating and when I was first introduced to IE, I really did not know what hunger felt like. There's a nice feeling of feeling hunger so you really WANT to eat when you're ready to eat. You don't want to get too hungry though, so the way it was explained to me is that you can go a little beyond the first signals of feeling that you're hungry. For some that might be when your stomach starts growling. That is not necessarily working for me right now. I just decide when I'm ready to eat, and since I no longer desire the junk food (I

won't call it fun food

right now), I am turning to what is actually decent food. That took me a while to get the concept. Why feed myself junk when there are so many delicious other foods to choose from? I am not telling myself I can never have the chips, candy, or whatever, but right now I am going to respect myself and eat solid FOOD. Even if that food means a sandwich (gasp) or pasta, etc. I will now usually cut the portion of my beloved pasta and include a nice, big salad (which I also enjoy) with that.. Yes, those days of sitting in front of a big bowl of pasta followed by cake and ice cream are over. Because I no longer want to do that. I would if I wanted to, but I don't want to do that. It took me a while to get here. Don't get discouraged. It takes time. Let us know of your progress. Tai

Thank you all for the kind welcoming. I am also glad that I have started early on this journey. My biggest challenge right now is being able to tell if I am fully hungry. does anyone have any suggestions? I am still working on the guilt but it has been going okay. I ate a cookie last night without guilt or overeating and also a few fries. Yay!

Thanks for the support

I am definitely going to try to listen better to my body signals. Thank you so much for reminding me that it takes time. I need to remember that. I am still into eating healthfully because of my previous eating plans I was on. I found a lot of things that I really enjoyed. I know that I still need to work on leaving the diet mentality, making peace with food and shutting down the food police. Thank you for sharing your experience. Yesterday ended up being a good day eating wise. I had a cookie at night and tried my hardest not to feel guilty but a little crept in. I wanted ice cream but did not have it because I was not hungry. This has helped me realize that it is not easy and will be a process and I appreciate that. Thank you for the input I have enjoyed it very much. To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2011 6:43 PMSubject: Re: Re: Intro

Wait until you don't have to list the things you ate in your mind anymore. That's real freedom. You'll be able to eat what you want and not worry about if it should be forbidden or not. :)

No Paige, that part came really soon for me. My problems are still eating only when hungry and stoppingAt the right level of fullness. I have serious issues with compulsive eatingwhich really cause a conflict between knowing IE and doing IE. I manage only moderately wellat this time. SunnySent from my iTouch

Sunny, (and Paige) it really does take time to get used to the hunger/fullness signals. I'm still working on it as well. It's almost like I'm afraid to start eating during the day because once the first hunger signal hits (like now), I might eat and then it seems the real struggle begins for the rest of the darn day.
