Hi Trent,

A very warm welcome to the group! I must say that your experience of finding

out you have blood and protein in your urine is a school lab experiment is

certainly a new one. It is a good thing you volunteered so you could be

properly diagnosed and begin being treated, although of course I am so sorry you

do have IgAN.

Let me also say thank you for your service in the Navy. We are all in debt to

those who serve to protect the rest of us.

We have quite a few members who are nurses, and also in nursing school so you

are in great company there.

Are you being treated for the high protein spill?

I am glad you introduced yourself and we look forward to getting to know you

better.

Trent:

Welcome to the group. Interestingly enough I first found out that I

had blood in my urine during an employee physical -- I didn't think

anything about it until I had my next " cold " and developed dark

brown urine. Of course, I didn't know it at the time, but these were

hallmarks of IGAN. Another interesting fact is that I also have a

3yr old son named Sam. Charlie, my other son is 14 months. They are

both napping right now -- what a rare treat.

I'm glad you found our group. I hope you have found a nephrologist

that you like, and I wish you all the best with your treatment.

Kind regards,

--Dave

Hi Trent.

Let me add my welcome to those of other members.

You know, I was in the Canadian Navy when I was in my early 20's. I was on

destroyer escorts and minesweepers on the west coast. My blood in the urine

was first discovered during a completely routine dipstik test in the

doctor's office when I was about 23 (maybe 24 - it was a long time ago, as

I'm 51 now).

Hi Trent,

Just wanted to quickly say welcome. Boy, that lab experiment must have been

a surprise... Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Who

made the diagnosis - your nephrologist or your regular doc? It sounds like

things have been moving very fast in your life. Has anyone discussed

treatment options? If you haven't already, do check out our web site

www.igan.ca There is an enormous amount of useful information there -

especially if you are just trying to get your feet on the ground and learn

the basics.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Trent welcome to the group, I'm glad you found us! How odd to find out

about your blood and protein in that way...did you double and triple check

it? I think I would have been staring at that dipstick in disbelief. It's

good that you did find it though as IgAN can go undetected for years since

it doesn't tend to show any symptoms early on. How does your serum

creatinine level look?

I will add my Thank You for serving our country to 's. And say thank

you also for working to become a nurse, we could use more good nurses out

there. You are in good company on this site, we have quite a few nurses and

nursing students here.

Welcome again!

Hi Shirely and welcome to the group. One type of breast cancer is enough for a person but two just doesn't seem fair.

Not everyone gets sick from chemo. I had mine back in 1990 and never got sick. Just a little nausea. Now they have better drugs for nausea and also other problems that can come up. Feel free to ask questions. If we can't help we will try to point you in the right direction. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hugs

Introducing myself

My name is Shirley and I have recently been diagnosed with ILC andIDC, both stage I. It was enough of a shock that I had breast cancerto begin with, but to find out that I have 2 different kinds reallysent my head spinning. I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy onMarch 3rd. I found out yesterday that my treatment plan includes chemo, radiationand anti-hormone therapy. I was hoping that I wouldn't need chemo, but that's not the case. I have to have a port put in my chest nextweek for my chemo meds. My oncoligist said that is the best way togive chemo to someone who is diabetic, otherwise the chemo could causealot of problems with collapsed veins and other things in my arm. Iwill be starting my treatments in about 2 1/2 weeks. I have a wonderful husband who is very supportive, goes to everyappointment with me. I also have 6 wonderful kids that are also verysupportive, but I can see the fear from the uncertainty in their eyes.My husband and I are self employed and my sister works with us. Allof my kids have offered to do whatever (including my job) is necessaryto help me through this. All of my kids are grown with families ofown, but all worked for me at one time or another. Some of them haveoffered to move back home for awhile, if I need them to. I hope itdoesn't come to that. So I do know that they will be able to helpkeep things going. I have been reading the posts for a couple weeks now, but this is thefirst time I have posted. I'm sure I will have questions along theway and am glad to know this group is here.Sorry for going on and on, just a little overwelmed at the moment.Shirley Arnold

Hi Shirley,

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. It's not that uncommon to have

different types of breast cancer. I have IDC and DCIS, stage 1.

I'm glad your family is involved and ready to help. I think doctors are

more aggressive with suggesting chemo for Stage 1 women, partially

because the numbers become more on our side, and there's more drugs to

help with side effects. That said, it won't be a cake walk as the ladies

here can attest, but we all get through it with support from family and

friends.

take care,

Hi Bonnie,

I'll be 52 in August. Very similar story to yours, although I still

don't seem to have much problem losing weight--it's the binging that is

a big problem for me. Welcome!

Sohni

Hi from NC. I'm Bonnie and like most women

my age (52) have been on many diets and programs, but find it harder,

and them less effective as I get older. My weight issues started for

real around 30. I found out about IE on the 3 fat chicks website forum,

read the book, and while still scared, and still weighing most days, am

getting into it and trying very hard to undo years of diet mentality.

Thanks. Mine is August too- the 8/24 part! I think since I never had weight

issues when I was young, I really resent dieting too much. Now that I'm older it

seems harder to make myself do deprivation knowing even if I lose all the

weight, I still won't look 25 anymore.

I know I won't look 25 again, but then I don't want to feel like I'm 70

yet. That is a big motivation for me!
