When did folic acid 1mg go OTC in the US? I am curious because you have been able to buy 400mcg and 800mcg folic acid over the counter for many years now. I am just curious because my insurance drops a meds immediately from the pharmacy plan as soon as it becomes OTC and I still require a prescription to get the 1mg folic acid tablets. So if you can send me the site where you saw that info I would love to have it.

In the US 1 mg Folic Acid is no longer a prescription drug but is over-the-counter. You might check to see if some OTC Folic Acid is available. If that fails then you need to look to dietary sources of Folic Acid. I'm not a nutritionist but I think that green leafy vegetables are rich in Folate. I hope someone who knows nutrition can help here. God bless.

About a year ago I got a prescription refilled for Folic Acid and when I went to get another refill they told me a prescription was no longer needed. Since then I have been buying it OTC. One time I looked at a different drug store and they only had the 400 and 800 mcg Folic Acid and not the 1 mg. I am confused about this also.

I get my Folic Acid at Sam's Club and just take 3 a day. Much, much cheaper.

Folic acid preparations have been OTC in the US for years, however,

certain preparations of folic acid may be available by prescription

only. Your physician may be ordering something which is particularly

effective and this may be why it remains prescription.

This is a bit like regular insulin being OTC in many states, but

Novolog (aspart) the rapid acting variety for pumps remaining

prescription.

Low dose potassium remains OTC whereas the most effective

preparations remain prescription.

In the eastern US there is presently no shortage of folic acid

preparations........although they may be a shortage of Mucinex

depending upon your location.

My Sam's Club stopped carrying the folic acid last month. Does yours still

carry it?
