Can T4 help temporarily/Val

I'll try to be brief but I am very upset about an 83 yr old friend who

has had a thyroid problem for over 60 yrs.She had partial thyroid removed and

went on Armour for years and did well on 2 Gr.

Then for some reason she was put on Synthroid, did not do well lost a lot of hair

and got back on Armour, did well then her GP thought she should decrease to 1 1/4

or1 1/2 which made no sense to me.People usually need more as they get older not

less.

Anyway I watched her deteriorate and finally suggested a complete panel

including RT3.He T3 was mid range and her RT3 was at a ratio of 11.

Ferritin a little low also. When Armour went off market, she got a compounded

substitute. She has gone down hill dramatically to the point of barely

functioning body temp of 96.So I suggested increasing her compounded and it

seemed to help but she only did this for 2 days then did no thyroid for 1 day

and now has been on Synthroid for 2 days..The dr only tested T4 and TSH so since

her T4 was low ,he put her on Synthroid. The problem is that her daughter is

married to a dr so she listens to them and they are not to be reasoned with.

I'm assuming her RT3 has not changed and if anything it is probably

worse. However she seems to be doing better.I'm wondering if she is still holding

some T3 from the other day or if the T4 can make her temporarily feel better.I

did read on one site that T4 can make a person with RT3 temporarily better.

I can't imagine that T4 is good so it has to be temporary.

How long will it take before this backfires?

What can we expect to happen and how long will it take?

If she gets worse,I think she will listen to me and try a Dr who will treat RT3.

Thanks

Chantal

I can't put a timescale to it but it's almost certainly a downward

spiral from there

More and more hypo symptoms which won't show on blood tests even if

they do an FT3.

Good luck. Point them at this if they will look at it

Without seeing her and knwoing vitals and what else is oging oin wiht

her it is impossible to knwo what is going to happen. Usually formthis

symdrome BP wil go too high and fluid retentoin and culminates in

Congestive Heart Failure if fluid in the lungs (pneumonia) doesntl get

them first. But to predict a time line is not possible. Many horrid

other sympotkos happen along the way such as crippling pain and gastro

diseases which compliate the whoel thing.

I'm so frustrated over this, I could scream.

As you stated here she is in a lot of pain and of course instead of addressing

the thyroid issue, she is now on Celebrex,Vicodan, and some sleeping pill.

I don't have the recent labs but her temps are running between 96-97.

She is getting weak, emotionally unstable, unable to cope. Her pulse is at 80.I

just worry she may end up in the ER and they won't know what to do and will just

attribute her issues to old age.

This is so hard to watch, scares the hell out of me in terms of ever having an

emergency and having to be under the care of the standard medical system. The

drs advice was to take T4 ,pain meds, sleeping pills cut out any unnecessary

activity wear gloves to keep her hands warm. The reason I asked about a timeline

is due to the influence of the son in law the DR and giving it time enough for

her to get worse,so she will see another Dr but yet making sure she doesn't go

into a coma.
