I think you mean you're taking 50 mcg of T3, not rT3. It's the rT3 your doc is

trying to drive down as it is, in part, responsible for your pre-treatment

condition.

You need to get yourself up to speed about the thyroid system, how it goes awry,

how treatment proceeds, etc. Don't make any decisions until you've done that.

You're not in any danger.

Read the site that accompanies this one, www.thyroid-rt3.com to get started,

then check back in.

thing that bothers me is that he said he didn't want to see RT3 on a new blood

test. Right now, since I've been on the T3 only, it wasn't a big deal I thought,

but as for when he starts the T4, that would be a different story. He had my

blood tested yesterday right after I saw him, and right after I had taken 10 mcg

of the T3, so I don't know how accurate those tests will be. He ordered Ft3, Ft4

and TSH.

You are right to worry. If oyu restart T4 ist is very important to knwo

if RT3 is returning. Many doctors do not understand RT3 issues. And I

have found it to be a usual ploy for doctors to tell you you are

overmedicated in T3 by having you test right after taking a dose. It

will show too high and he will insist you are on way too much T3 when in

fact 50mcg is a rather small dose when on T3 only.

Hello and welcome. Sounds like your Dr doesn't know a lot I'm afraid.

There is no reason you can't stay on T3 only long term if you do well

on it, you can even get it cheaply prescription free mail order from

Mexico if you need to.

The " typical dose " is 75 to 125 a day for people to feel best on.

If you were swapping onto part T4 the way to do it would have been to

start the T4 and then reduce the T3 as it built up, not to send you

violently hypo by taking away T3 that you need and replacing it with

something that takes at least 4 weeks to build up in your body!!!

Have a look round here, it may answer a lot of questions for you

Hi Roni,

You're fortunate that he even recognizes RT3 as being an issue. If you check out Nick's site, which I think he sent to you in a previous post, you'll find a treasure of information on the RT3 issue, dosing, etc. There is also a lot of good information on how you'll know when to increase your dose and how to know when the RT3 has cleared your body -- both in the blood and in the cells. It takes around 12 to 15 weeks minimally if I remember correctly.

You may have to stand your ground with your doctor and tell him that you don't want to see any RT3 on your lab report either, and that you're going to stick with this protocol long enough to make sure you clear it.

Your labs for T3 will be falsely high since you took your dose before your labs were done. It's recommended that you don't take even your previous day's afternoon/evening doses when preparing for labs. It your doc is like most, he's going to look at the faux-high T3 and tell you that you have to stop the T3-only protocol immediately. I'd say, since he didn't even order the RT3 on your labs, he may not believe RT3 is a relevant issue.

Your situation is precisely what happened with the latest new doc that I saw a week ago. I took my Cytomel that morning (2 doses), showed a high T3 on my labs, and was told I needed to go back on Synthroid. And, needless to say, this new doc didn't even order RT3. I'm afraid I'm going to be adding this doc to the "you're fired!" list as well.

Good luck to you. Read a lot on Nick's board, ask a lot of questions here and work on your dosing to see how much better you're going to feel. It's very encouraging to read of people's successes. I think the most difficult thing for me and a lot of other folks is getting past self-car and increasing doses correctly.
