Guest guest
Sometimes low ferritin goes hand-in-hand with low stomach acid. Stomach acid usually decreases with age, making it harder to absorb the necessary iron from foods. So a 30-year-old who easily absorbed all iron needed from food may find herself, 10+ years later, with low ferritin and in need of iron supplements. People who take lots of antacids will also impair their iron absorption, by the same mechanism, they have lowered their stomach acid. I believe the aging factor is true of vitamin b12 as well, the older one is the more likely one is to not be absorbing it adequately from food anymore, and in need of supplementation. > > My gastro doctro is concerned about my low ferritn 23, 70 - 90 range. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply, I feel a little better knowing their are reasons other than having cancer to cause low ferritin. You would think the doctor would have told me about antiacids impairing iron absortion. He treated me for an ulcer a few years ago and knows that I was taking antiacids. > > > > My gastro doctro is concerned about my low ferritn 23, 70 - 90 range.
