I get mine in 1 mg strength OTC at the drug store. Many stores only carry 400 mcg and 800 mcg strength as OTC. It is one of the B complex of vitamins and many people get enough if their diet contains enough green leafy vegetables. However, Methotrexate depletes folic acid in our bodies so if we take Methotrexate we are likely to need a supplement of Folic Acid. It also reduces the side effects of Methotrexate. Here's a link to one of many internet articles on folic acid deficiency. http://www.chclibrary.org/micromed/00048590.html God bless.

Can I ask why you dont take the folic acid on the days that you take the methotrexate. I thought that would be the most important day to take it. I seem to forget to take it but I do make sure the the day of and after I take my methotrexate I take it. Just curious.

I take 1200 mcg a day. My multivitamin has 400 mcg and I take 2 400 mcg tablets every day except Tuesday. I don't take it on the day I take my methotrexate, just the 400 in the multivitamin.Sharon

I take 1 gram of folic acid every day. That's what my dr gave me.

Just FYI. Use Leucovorin 8 hours after your MTX. It works miracles with after effects. Use folic acid as a regular dietary supplement included in a multivitamin. I love centrum chewables. They have 100% of the essential nutrients your body might need in addition to your diet. Deborah

Folic Acid depletes a little of the Methotrexate so some doctors

recommend skipping Folic Acid the day of taking Methotrexate or even the day

after. Most doctors feel the slight loss of Methotrexate is less significant

than the substantial decrease in side effects by taking Folic Acid every day.

The amount of Methotrexate prescribed allows for this depletion by Folic Acid.

At least this is what I have heard. God bless.

My doctor told me the same thing that Harold posted. He suggested not

taking any folic acid supplements, but he said not to worry about the

amount in a daily multi-vitamin.

Sharon,

I'd never heard you just shouldn't take folic acid on the day you take

your methotrexate. I'm going to ask my RA dr about it.

I was told that it can inhibit the action of the MTX if you take it at

the same time. What is important is keeping a level of folic acid

built up all the time. I take it six days a week and never have mouth

sours. I just didn't want to risk inhibiting the MTX.
