Hi Group,

I'm leaving town for a week, so this is my last post for a while.

Just wanted to share some more research with you. A while back I

asked a question about taking antibiotics and probiotics at the

same time. I was concerned that it might be a waste of money

because you keep killing off everything you plant.

This is an interesting study done on patients taking Erythromycin

and suffering diarrhea from it. You'd think the combination of

antibiotics and diarrhea would knock out any probiotic trying to

adhere to the intestinal walls. The study was made using the

Lactobacissus GG which is cultured from humans, not from milk

products. It has an unusually high ability to adhere under difficult

conditions. This is from the article:

LGG and Antibiotic Associated Diarrhea

Many antibiotics produce serious gastrointestinal side effects.

Erythromycin, especially, is a frequent cause of such problems. In a

study by Siitonen--two groups of healthy volunteers took a moderate

dose of erythromycin—400 mg, three times daily for 7 days. One

group received LGG-containing yogurt, while the control group was

given conventional pasteurized yogurt. The number of daily bowel

movements was fewer, the duration of diarrhea was shorter, and the

frequency of stomach pain, abdominal pain, and nausea were

significantly reduced in the LGG group. Fecal counts of LGG during

erythromycin administration revealed that 75% of the volunteers had

detectable levels of LGG despite the use of an antibiotic that is

active against LGG in vitro.
