Hi ,

First let me pass on some invaluable information that has been on

this list several times; Let the doctor's office talk to your

insurance company. Don't contact them yourself. They know how to

communicate with them and you don't want to shoot yourself in the

foot (so to speak).

Second, I believe there has been someone who traveled to England and

had their US insurance company pay. Someone will remember who it was

and let you know.

There is a list of all surgeons offering resurfacing in the US on

Activejoints.com. Be sure to look at both the Cormet 2000 as well as

the Conserve + as there are two studies going on and different

doctors involved in each. Not sure off hand if there is anyone in

Florida but it sort of rings a bell.

I had resurfacing done in Illinois by Dr. Stachniw and would

recommend him highly but I don't remember anyone having anything but

the highest praise for their own doctor. Apparantly the medical

companies involved in FDA studies screen their doctors very carefully

considering they have a great deal at stake if their device fails.

Lastly, my insurance company is also Blue Cross/Blue Shield (of

Illinois) and they paid for my resurfacing (All but $2.00!).

Best luck and feel free to email if you want.

A few points from my experience. (LBHR May 02 Treacy Priory Hospital

Birmingham, RBHR Nov 02 Treacy Nuffield Hospital, Birmingham.)

1. If money is not as important as results go to Birmingham, England where

the procedure originated.

2. In any event find a surgeon who has performed many resurfacings, like 100+

preferably 1000+ like in Birmingham.

3. Visit http://www.midmedtec.co.uk

Good luck

Hi

I too am in Florida. . . .and wanted to pass the follwing info on to you. I

have not yet had the resufacing proceedure but have been considering and

gathering info for about 6 months. I have learned of 2 OS in the state who

perform the proceedure if you wish to pursue them.

Dr Kennedy in Sarasota. He uses the C+ and has been resurfacing for

about 3 years from what I know.

Dr. Helmy is near Cocoa Beach. I learned of him through the surfacehippie

group.

Go back through the achives and search for mail with the subject Dr. Kennedy

& /or Dr. Helmy. You should find some direct comments. I remember reading

emails confirmating insurance coverage for each.

All I have heard is good regarding each of these Drs.

Good Luck!

Dear Cavill,

I, too, live in Florida.

I found an excellent surgeon, Dr. Kennedy in Sarasota who resurfaced

my left hip in February of this year. Am doing very well. I need to get the

right hip done , but it has much less pain since the left one was done!!!

I can well understand your fear. I was frightened also. But, you go into

the hospital, fall asleep, wake up and it is over and you are in recovery.

Hip was done on a Tuesday and I left Friday AM and stayed in a motel across

the street. Next day, we drove back home.

Best wishes to you. You will be glad you took the plunge and had the

surgery. I am now doing three miles on the treadmill, climbing stairs, etc.

I am the exact same situation as you, 44 male in Florida, bad left hip,

insurance problems. I have been denied by VISTA and by Blue Cross/Blue Shield

Health Options of Florida. I am in my last appeals with both. I know a man who

had his resurf done by Treacy and Blue Cross South Carolina paid 90%. It seems

the Blue Crosses don't have anything in common except their name. And they are

extremely difficult.

You can email me if you would like, perhaps we live very close.

Hi ,

I am not 100% sure but if you have retained your English citizenship

aren't you covered by the UK's National Health coverage?

I have Portugese citezenship and I was told that I could recieve

coverage in Belgium if I had a E112 form which is health care for EU

residents living abroad who want to be treated in the EU. The form is

easy enough to get if you have an EU passport.

I'm not sure what the policy in England is or if resurfacing would be

covered under National Health care at all, does anyone else know?

Yes, it is covered by NHS, but you may have to wait a long time for

it.

Hi !

You can find a list of the surgeons who are able to offer

resurfacing at activejoints.com There's 2 groups doing the trials;

one for the Conserve Plus by Med Tech; and the other for the

Cormet 2000 by Corin Med Tech.

I am infinitely happy with my resurf from Dr Mont in Baltimore - my

life has returned to a pain-free blur of activity...:) and the care

given at Sinai Hospital is absolutely top-notch!

The best advice I can give you is this: the possible insurance

hassle is best left to your surgeon's office - do NOT contact your

insurance provider yourself, because I guarantee they'll say they

don't cover non-FDA-approved devices.

Best wishes! Deb (40 y/o at the time) C+ 5-2-02 Dr Mont

--Seeing as nobody will answer your question, just keep

babbling on about Europe, I'll tell you. If you can travel to

Baltimore, you'll find Dr s at s Hopkins U and

Drs Mont and Etienne at Sinai Hospital ext 8500. I

travelled 550 miles by car from Michigan to have Dr Mont do mine.

That was 13 months ago and been doing nothing but better ever since.

There is also a Allan Inglis, Jr. MD 343 West 58th Street New York,

NY 10019 Phone: . Drs Inglis and s are in the Cormet

study and Drs Mont and Etienne are in the Conserve Plus study.

I am 50 now and feel like I'm forty instead. Decided not to play

anymore indoor soccer, but I did until 2 weeks ago. Some poor

officiating and cheap tackles scared me off. I do ref again at the

premier league level. Activities have resumed to what I was doing 5=

years ago, all at the encouragement of Dr Mont, who says I just make

him look better and better all the time.

Give these surgeons a call and talk with their staffs, see who you

like and ask them what the need from you to get the ball rolling.

That's what I did.

Good luck, Captain Amaze_O

Deb.......thank you for your reply! Was your surgery done 8 months ago? How

long will the resurface last and is down hill skiing allowed?
