Guest guest
Hi everyone! I'm new here so I thought that I'd tell you all a little about myself. I am twenty-four years old and just graduated from college in August with a degree in dietetics. Although I am not a dietitian yet, I am working towards it. I have been dieting for quite a while now, but probably not as long as some others here. I was an overweight child and teenager, but became a vegan (for ethical reasons) when I reached college. I lost a lot of weight without any effort due to this change, but then this slowed. I began counting calories to continue losing weight. I am still a vegan (and will be forever!) and committed to healthy eating, but would like to eat more intuitively instead of stuffing myself with baked goods, etc. After I become a dietitian and learn to eat intuitively I would like to help others to learn how to be intuitive eaters. Since learning about intuitive eating I have realized that this is my ultimate goal.
Guest guest
Welcome. Glad to have you with us. Have you read the book Intuitive Eating by Tribole? It is a good place to start and there are other good sources, books and web sites too. One thing that is common to most of us here is that we have all tried the dieting route maybe many times, many different diets and found that DIETS DON'T WORK. I think that's the most important first step and it doesn't happen overnight. I still find myself with the old diet mentality sneaking it's way into my brain sometimes. It's hard to change a lifetime of thinking, even if that thinking was erroneous. Please keep posting and reading the posts. We care. Sandy Hi everyone! Guest guest
Happy to have you here! I'm interested to know what someone with a dietetics background thinks about IE. Please let us know if you have any thoughts or questions, or just need some support. It's important to remember that IE is usually a long (and wonderful) journey, as it takes time to heal one's disordered relationship with food and body image. And yes, I highly recommend the book as a starting point. -- Sent from my iPhone Welcome. Glad to have you with us. Have you read the book Intuitive Eating by Tribole? Guest guest
Well, when I first read about the book, Intuitive Eating, I was a little skeptical. During my undergraduate education we were taught the whole '3500 kcals in a pound' idea and thought that was the only way to lose weight. My instructors mentioned the idea of eating when hungry and stopping when full, but food journals, meal plans, and exercise were the basis of weight loss for us. Due to this I have been counting calories for several years. While I lost some weight with this, I haven't lost as much as I would like and feel deprived all the time! I recently started intuitive eating (about 1 week ago) and love it. I don't feel as though I'm gaining weight but have been staying away from the scale. I am also not relying on sugar-free gum to get rid of my food cravings as much. It is really an eye-opener for me to follow my natural hunger and fullness cues and hope that I can pass this on to clients when I become a dietitian!
